Anyone had the problems with the automatic transmission?
Mine is 62Reg and so far around 18000 miles. I can feel more vibration when I engage in R mode. The dealership told me that the transmission will be replaced to sort out this issue. But I am thinking that replacing the transmission might be a bug job for the car. I need your help. |

Had first service last week on my F20 125i. No problems so far after 31.000km. BMW had tree actions for the car. This was the following - 1) Determine and check camshaft. 2) Rework corrosion protevtion of the engine compartment. 3) Remove water drain grommet of the units compartment. Apart from engine oil, oil filter and microfilter, they also changed the spark plugs. I would think the spark plugs should last longer, but maybe I'm wrong.

Spark plugs at 31.000km? That's fast. Maybe out of precaution for the Norwegian winter, with another spark-"temperature"?
I had the water drain grommet as well. And my car is going back in 20 & 21 October for an elaborate check of the (driver) seats. |

Well I bought my Jul 2012 120d Sport (As seen in my sig) as an AUC in May 2013 with 9,400 miles on the clock. 18 months later the car has 14,100 miles on (No I don't do big miles and the DPF has been fine, not even a regen that I have noticed). It has not been the best of ownership experiences tbh although I love the way it drives and consumption has been superb at 51mpg average overall with a high of 63mpg on a long motorway run.
I had to make a choice recently with 8 months warranty to run on keeping it long term or changing for something else due to a lack of confidence in the car. Faults have all been fixed now and it's all as it should be but I have decided to change the car and will post in my own thread once it happens. Fault history :- Returned to source dealer (Stratstone Chesterfield) for blower mod after 3 days. Timing chain, guides, tensioners, rollers and water pump timing gear replaced at 9,900 miles. Both front sport seat frames replaced due to corrosion of seat plates. Foot pedal pivot bolt bushes replaced (Clicky pedal problem) Oil pan (Sump) failure requiring BMW recovery after engine oil loss (No damage) Exhaust fumes entering cabin, flexible exhaust section failed needing specialist welding and bracket replacement. Exhaust smell still evident requiring revisit for air system cleaning and all filters replaced. A/C system generating whirring noise in use - refridgerant replaced as pressure was fine. Tailgate clonk - still present as it's intermittent and I'm changing anyway. Have to say my local dealership Marshall Scunthorpe (Formerly Astle) has been nothing short of brilliant whenever work has been required and always provided a free courtesy car which is why they are getting my buisiness to change.

My 116d is starting to sound like an old tractor.
It's a 63 plate done just over 16k miles, due its first service in about 2k miles so I will question bmw about it then. Has any one else found there Diesel engines sounding a bit rough? Or know what could cause this? It definitely didn't sound like that a year ago. I'll mention it when it goes for service but I'd like to know what would cause this before hand just incase they try to fob me off. Thanks |

Yeah in the colder months my 116D started to sound rougher. But then most cars do so nothing to really worry too much about.

I have a 118i (f20) from September 2011 and it has had its fair share of problems... Nothing deadly but things you don't expect on a new car.
1.Extreme rattle on cold start (much like this) This is completely normal according to dealership. 2. Rattling noise around 1400-1500 RPM. This happens only when driving and it's much like the cold start noise above. There's a theory that the actuator is slamming into the turbo heat shield but i don't know. I've given up on this one. This is also normal according to the dealership, mkaay. 3. Squeaky/noise doors. Just sitting in the car, leaning quickly from side to side or driving around normally induces this horrible noise. This can be fixed by using a wurth rubber care spray on all rubber details, including the top flocked ones. It is extremely important that it is silicone free. The dealership said this noise is normal and that i should clean the rubber with soap (I tried, did not help), wtf... 4. Ticking/knocking noise from engine when warmed up. The engine is noisy as it is but when this appeared around 50 000 km I lost faith in this car. The dealer listened and basically said, lets start with the timing chain tensioner (200€) and see if it fixes it. During the disassemble they said the old one was loose and later that the noise was gone. I picked it up and the noise was still there. Their next bet is the fan belt (150€) because apparently it was a bit damaged. I have my doubts. I have infinite money right, so lets try this as well! It sounds like classic valve adjustment but since this is Valvetronic this should not happen so it has to be something else. Any ideas? Here's a sound clip. 5. Trunk lock mechanism stopped working last week so now I can't go anywhere or keep anything in the car. The mechanism just wont lock anymore. The trunk just bounces when i try to close. Unlocking, locking etc. does nothing. Dealer said they have to order a new one 120€. 6. Steering column has been a bit squeaky now and then but not enough for me to take action. 7. The plastic cover on the passenger side, in the foot well next to the stick is vibrating and acting noisy. 8. Rain sensor tolerance is way off. It has to be on max to be of any use at all. Normally ends up having to manual wipe or go into constant wiping mode. 9. Cruise control will sometimes act up. Lets say when i go from 90->100 it will go 90->100->94 when just using the "thumbwheel". All in all it feels cheap and because BMW insist this is all normal we're not even considering a 3-series now that our family is expanding. My 118i sounds much more like a diesel than the replacement 118d I currently have |

Our 2012 116i is more than 3 years old, has 37000 km, and still no issues. Even the rear wiper blade is still okay after several winters in Norway.

My 2013 114i (bought and registered summer 2014 though, so about a year in use now) has a bit over 10.000km on the clock. No real problems to report. The minor annoyances:
OK, maybe the headlight issue is a real problem. The wastegate (at least, I suppose it is the wastegate) hiss is a weird one, but I understood it should be normal. Does anyone else notice this sound? I kinda get the feeling this is specific to 114i I have the first service coming up next month - only 10.000km a year, and all in city - and I think I will mention the foggy headlight and the various annoying sounds. Though I'm 95% sure the sounds are either normal, or even if they're not, the dealer will say they are. And I'm not expecting them to fix the headlight either really. Oh well.. maybe an oil change at least. |

I found the lighter socket (I have a mandatory smoker's package though I don't smoke and do hate smoking) too tight for my phone's charge plug (the car manual warns against force pushing - they knew! ) but the passenger footwell additional socket is just all right! So the lighter socket isn't really a power socket I suppose. I recall a news of a Honda burnt by charging a phone from the lighter and the warranty was denied! Yet, BMW offers OEM accessory USB adapters which must be fine. To prevent dropping into, I see a dummy plug cover in my rear passengers' power socket (I have the storage package) but it might not fit the lighter socket due to diameter difference. I never take the lighter out. > [*]Some rattling sound at low revs, high gear and accelerating. Might be one of the heat shields a bit loose? It's the wrong gear, for sure. I don't recall any rattling for whatever reason it could be (although I even stalled the engine a few times, honestly). > [*]Annoying wastegate hissing when releasing throttle after acceleration, especially on Sport mode. Don't release. > [*]Squeaky doors You must have just too many of those. > The wastegate (at least, I suppose it is the wastegate) It is. > Does anyone else notice this sound? Yes: "Turbo Whoosh and a random squeak". > I kinda get the feeling this is specific to 114i 114i isn't really quite specific: the same engine detuned programmatically. > And I'm not expecting them to fix the headlight either really. They must as you can show them the difference (one foggy, the other clear). Just don't let them escape the inevitable. |
