It makes absolute perfect sense offering An M or an M Performance model from X1 to X7.
What is the performance X1 going to be please and when can we expect it?

I've been getting some serious seat/driving time with both the X3 28i and 35i and have I been underestimating it. I always thought if you wanted a SUV/SAV from BMW, the X5 was the only way to go. Was I wrong. The 28i is an excellent vehicle if you just need the volume and cargo space. The 35i gives you everything the 28i does but the chassis is tuned a bit more if you want that bit of sporting character. Option it with the cameras and HUD and you got yourself a SAV to fit all your needs.

With that said, I can't wait to see what the X3M brings. We all know the X5/X6 M are beasts, but at too high of a price tag for most.

Yep, that's how I ended up with my used 2014 sample. The only fault in this car are the brakes. Some major strangeness with their tuning - I'll pull them out this spring, hoping the previous owner has installed some crappy low dust aftermarket pads.

But I'd add that a key option to get was the EDC suspension option, only available as an add-on with the M Sport in the US. In the softer setting it's as comfy as my previous 5er, and in Sport it's got the right tautness for a non-fully-M car. With the M Sport you also get the VDC torque vectoring at the rear, which you can actually feel when accelerating hard in tight corners.

So I expect the new X3M will be faster (significantly so), will have much better braking and a somewhat harder riding suspension with better handling. All around goodness. I'll wait for them to come off lease, and jump ship.

I loved my 2011 X3 3.5i M Sport. Was bummed that more performance parts hadn't come out when I owned. I went with the X3 because it handled SO much better than an X5 with nearly the same interior and cargo volume, plus was much quicker. Should have bought it off lease when I had the chance. :-(

This. A sporty SAV/SUV that is quick, handles/brakes well, hauls 5 people and gear without the big size and price tag an X5M offers.

Price remains to be seen. With the addition of XDrive to an M this size and no manual option, it may start at $3-$4K more than a base M3.

Updated June 22, 2017:

Its camouflage remains the same as before, but the X3 M prototype has just added a sporty tailgate / roof spoiler.

I cannot wait to drive one. I hope it does not disappoint.

I assume the Base Macan, and SQ5 will be main competition? The Macan sets a high bar for sporty SUVs.

No, the X3 30i and M40i will be positioned against those vehicles respectively.

The X3 M will have 450hp+ and handily outperform the SQ5, as well as cost ~$15k more. It will very likely be priced shy of the Macan Turbo - probably just under $70k, and with more power could represent a good value as compared to that competitor even if it is not necessarily able to match it toe-to-toe in every performance category. However, the Macan Turbo could also see a power increase by the time the X3 M reaches owners hand in early 2019.

Loving it! I don't know if I can wait long enough to get it but cannot wait to see it unveiled and test drive it.

almost seems like they felt the need for more downforce? if so I hope it will be integrated much better on the final product and this was just a temp fix.

Looks horrible! X5M didn't need one.

If you think that's the finished product .. you all need your bimwad cards revoked. I mean seriously.. which one of you is gonna complain about the mismatched wheels next? Chill on the kneejerk reactions on a car in camo and wait for the final product so you don't get egg on your face ...
