I like the looks, not a fan of the FWD setup, but bring it to the US in an AWD variant and you have a winnar!

I don't intend to be rude but.
Seems like you wanted a BMW. Did not want RWD, which BMW is famous for. Bought your car with xdrive. And now sees an improvement in BMW since they offer FWD over xdrive.
That makes so little sense to me..

I think most people have experienced the advantage over many others cars in a BMW.
Smaller turning circle compared to most similar sized AWD or FWD cars. Does not take any skill to take advantage of that.
Generally a better steering feel. That you get the advantage of every time time you drive a car.
No torque steer. No skill needed to take advantage of that.
Better response in an emergency situation due to less understeer. Just turn the wheel fast enough on the car with ESP will sort out the rest.

Some advantages for drivers that like to push the car a little (and still be safe thanks to the great handling of the car, and even more the the modern electronics)
Less understeer in general.
Less understeer when accelerating.
The ability to put down more power, especially in wet conditions when several people are in the car.(FWD gets worse, RWD gets better)
The smile on your face!

For all the people who have driven a go-kart on track. Picture you how much less fun that would have been in a fwd.
I will not even go into the fun one can experience with a good RWD car.

I now drive a FWD "BMW-product", Mini Cooper S. I am aware of several FWD benefits. And if a FWD chassis is set up right it can be good fun. I do think BMW will make the car to be a good handling FWD.
But BMW should be the "ultimate driving machine". The strong BMW brand will be watered down with a FWD.
RWD is the better drivetrain for an "ultimate driving machine". Without a doubt! And BMW was that one automaker of cars without FWD as an option. Because they focus on driving pleasure!

I do hope that the new 1-series sportshatch will make it easier for BMW to earn more money by attracting more people, and having lower productions costs due to fwd. So as long as that will make BMW still focus on RWD drivers cars im good.
3-series will always be RWD. It is like the 911. Something you don't change the recipe for it works. But it have gotten fatter...
Just praying (to the car gods?) that the FWD 1-series will not take the place of the RWD 1-series. If that happens BMW might loose me as a future customer. Because I want a small, nimble and lightweight RWD BMW. And so do many others. There is so many other FWD out there. 1-series is the only small hatcback with RWD. And I don't want to loose that!
But to be honest, I fear that might happen..

(Will probably need to drive my cousins E46 some time in the winter, just to get me "fix" of RWD and that great driving position)
Actually, I havent updated my profile since the iphone app was available. I have always owned a z3. I sold the 325xi for a 135 n55 and am now also driving a cooper a as daily driver.

That being said, the mini cooper s out handles all the above cars on a fwd platform. It is also faster than the z3 and 325xi. Don't believe me? Go pick flip through a couple different car magazines to confirm it.
You can say this and that about turning radius and whatnot but at the end of the day, the mini can put down decent numbers on a fwd platform. If you cant wrap your mind around a fwd 1 series, go buy a 2 series.

Because I've been a loyal BMW owner since 1994 and wish they'd get their out of asses and make ultimate driving machines. They are quickly becoming the ultimate family and commuter vehicle. Let VW have that crown and stay true to course.

Its a sign of the times guys
BMW has been forced into this kind of marketing, the same as other car makers.
Merc now has a FWD 'AMG' ,
Audi has its S and RS
VW has R

BMW like Audi is more specific to only building cars, so they have to look at the volumes in each market segments and therefore use their 'M Sport' as a tool for the 'performance' style in their models to generate more sales thought the appeal of the M. Where it falls down now is that they are not totally differentiating them.

If BMW only did 'M Sport' in each model where it only used the highest performance motor in that engine range (4pot) (6pot) along with a M sport body and interior package it would be accepted, as a sub version of the M'number' and it would be seen as a seperate model variant. The problem now is that you can get M on everything.

Perhaps BMW should have a true 'M' and create a "M Sport" badge for these variants.

All these BMWs now have more electronic gismos than you can count, so perhaps it should be a 'Q' badge

The BMW M Carbon racer is a very nice bicycle, and yes, it has the ///M-badge.

It is lightweight (carbon fibre), has RWD, 28" wheels, immediate pedal response and manual gears.

WHY? because it is about protecting your brand and sticking to your core. Sure in the short term you will have big gains but will diminish your brand for the long term. This car is not what BMW is about, its not always about exploiting every market.
You have to remember that BMW in the US and BMW in Europe are pretty different, the US gets a limited range of high priced models where in Europe the range is significantly larger with cheapo models all the way up to the 760iL. The main marklet for this car is Europe, is it even going to come to the US, but I don't believe Europeans will give a monkeys about this being a FWD BMW, I also bet the 3 series will end up FWD in a generatio of so with the performance models being AWD.

That's the rational way of looking at it. But to people who have an emotional bond to BMW and their cars, building FWD cars is like cheating on your partner/forgetting your own principles.

RWD cars have perfect proportions and they are immediately recognized as sporty driving machines. A bunch of crap on wheels like the 1GT will not be any different from the cheap Kias and Audis.

WTF BMW? BMW needs to stop putting ///M badges on all these wimpy people haulers. Discussions about FWD, RWD, AWD are not terribly relevant in this context, though I agree that FWD sucks in every objective sense. Make as many FWD crap-mobiles as you want, just keep the ///M off them!

The ///M badge doesn't belong on these cars! Stop being like Audi with their stupid S-line crap. It just dilutes the ///M brand; non-enthusiasts don't know or care what an ///M badge means anyway, so I doubt it will help sell cars to these neophytes. It just makes owners of real ///M cars feel like their cars are less special. One of the main reasons I got rid of my 335 was that I was tired of driving such a common car that looked exactly the same as a car $20k cheaper. Why would we bother buying an ///M if it loses its exclusivity (ignoring driving characteristics)? If I only cared about having a fast car, I would have bought a Mustang or some other domestic bucket.

Flame me if you want, but (relative) exclusivity is a big selling point on the ///M cars.

You don't see a Nissan Altima-R; just saying...

BMW are just a German Hyundai. All these BS sports models make a mockery of the image they've worked so hard to build. In 10 years we will the result of this blatant money grab.

Nice looking hatch. If it were here in the U.S. I would get this as my second ride, easy.
