Just this morning I went to a final (3rd) interview for the northeast Business Development Manager position for a flagship company in the electronics industry. I'll know if I won the gig next week. This is my career.

I also DJ every Saturday night at an all-nude gentlemen's club right near MetLife Stadium (where the Jets & Giants play). This gets me out of the house and provides extra cash to go on trips and buy toys.

About 9 years ago I had a super-jealous girlfriend accuse me of going to a strip club while out of town on a business trip. She claimed that someone she knew recognized me, took a picture and text it to her. I called out her bs with one question... Who the hell is taking pictures in a strip club? :

My belief is purchasing is more difficult than people think it is... At least in my industry (electronics). The purchasing guys do seem to get all the perks from manufacturers though.

Everyone loves to hate on the Buyer because we get paid to develop relationships and have extremely flexible hours / work schedules.

I understand that.

Yes, there are many perks and some days feel like you didnt work at all.

Performance is tracked very closely through... can definitely be very stressful at times as well. Our job at the end of the day is to protect the company from blood thirsty suppliers/vendors and drive down costs. Also manage inventories and relay market information. Without the Buyer, companies cannot function.

As an outside sales professional I can relate. I was thinking of the physical perks. The Purchasing team seem to be the ones getting tickets behind home plate at the Yankees games.

Yep. Sporting events, fancy dinners, small(ish) gifts, etc are all part of the corporate shmooze. We never let those sway our decisions though

Having been on both sides of the coin, supplier management at a major OEM and an account manager at a tier 1 supplier, I can tell you that 90% of purchasing people are morons. Very few of them have even a basic understanding of what they're buying, let alone any idea of what it takes to actually make it.

Two weeks ago, I had a customer tell me we should buy a $2,000,000 CNC mill so we can provide them with $5 widgets faster. He even offered to give me a guaranteed PO for 10,000 pieces over the next two years.

Vetting/developing new suppliers requires some talent to do it effectively, but the people slinging POs and purchase reqs all day are monkeys at best.
