M135i was built to compete with S3 and Golf R.
A45 AMG will be followed by RS3 and M2 and I bet that it will come on the last place.
I'm curious about 125i with Performance Pack vs the GTI with that Comp Pack...

This is not the first time when he put in the bad light the BMW, he put all 3 cars on a mountain and speak about them.....WTF is that comparison for?????
We need to know on the track and 1/4 mile who is winning...not.... THAT.....LOL

That A45 is super impressive, I've been out in one. I never thought a strip of straight 50 roads would have provided so much fun, but it was. The poke that thing has in a straight line is like nothing i've ever been in, certainly hatchback wise.

I love the M135i but its not a real match for that AMG. I'm still confident the 6 cylinder would nail the Mercs 4 in a very very long drag. But out in the real world with corners and junctions and B roads etc the BMW falls short without the diff, traction and real sports style springs that the AMG does have.

It's not entirely fairy tale mind. Its very firm suspension on anything less than perfect roads and the exhaust note wasn't all that after being in the BMW. The demonstrator didn't have the performance exhaust fitted, but then again nor did the BMW. Boot wasn't as spacious in terms of width anyway and the space for bigger backseat passengers isnt ideal.

I suppose it all depends what your looking for from the car.

I don't like Sutcliffe's reviews in general, I much prefer Carlos Lago and Csaba Csere

BMW really does need to sort out their new electronic power steering or they're going to continue to get hammered in reviews. Having said that, I cannot believe the reviewer didn't address the #1 question everyone (I know) has about the new M133 engine: what's the turbo lag like?

If you check the Autocar written review, things don't sound too good:

Quote:
For all its specific power, it’s a civilised lump. There’s lag, of course – you can’t expect 178bhp per litre without it. Accelerate at 1500rpm and you’ll be greeted by not a great deal. By 2000rpm the A45 has woken up, and by 3000rpm it’s delivering a strong mid-range. Only above 4500rpm, though, does it begin to feel like the 4.6sec to 62mph car it’s claimed to be, in a short and heady rush from there to the engine's 6500rpm redline.
Yikes. Late power delivery from a turbocharged car is a major peeve of mine. I just won't tolerate it.

BMW M135 for me is the choice, even tho A45 seems more appealing to me. Just because it has RWD. it wasnt mentioned there. Other than that, Chris Harris opinion on the subject seem more crucial to me, as you all may remember, he said, the BMWs steering was great in last vid he tested it. RWD Is all different story and complete different behaviour on the road. Different kind of emotions. A car isnt just about 0-100 time. Its something more than simple numbers.

A45 has an unofficial time of 8:06 at the Nurbergring.

Sport Auto has 1M at 8:15 and M135i at 8:18, I hope they will test A45 as well.

Its not that late, after about 2200-2500rpm it feels like a rocket and then it just keeps going all the way to the redline. The BMW just seems to peek a bit too quick then goes for a bit, then slightly dies off. They are offer very different power surges. BMW definitely better for those quick little overtakes when your stuck behind a slug of a driver, but if you want a good surge of power then the AMG is that bit quicker

What is more interesting to me, is how quick the engine can deliver maximum torque for the RPM you are at when you go from coasting to full throttle. That is what turbo lag is about, not RPM. Even the 116i with its tiny turbo has very noticeable turbo lag, even though the journalists claims it hasn't.

They should have had an E46 M3 CSL as a reference car.

It doesn't mean if on paper they seem similar, on the road they are completely different. Another thing, if they had to make a test don't take the cars up some messed up road go on a drag see how all 3 compare and get the m135i xdrive and go on a circuit see how they all do based on laptime. Yes the Gti is the benchmark/icon when it comes to hatchbacks and they will always improve gradually, but Mercedes really? I sat in the a250 amg and I felt like a squashed bug in the rear seats, ac knobs are too low apart from the cheap plastic bits. Now that my rant is over sorry guys, all 3 cars are nice, lovely test, but my money would be on the bmw then Gti then Mercedes. Common bring on the mk7r vs rs3 vs a45 vs m2 now that would be a hell of a test.

Mercedes has been really stepping up their game lately~
But for a fair comparison, aside from them being "hot hatches" I thought I remember reading a statement from Mercedes Benz that they are gearing that A45/CLA45 towards the 1M/M2 segment? Wouldn't that be a much fairer comparison since it would be Mercedes's entry level AMG VS. BMW's entry level M? I think I'm going have to wait for the comparison between the CLA45 Vs. 1M/M2 before making a judgement~

What raffoul232 said, mk7r vs rs3 vs a45 vs m2 would definitely be proper!

CLA isn't on the same page as the A45 according to reviews I've read. It's not as dynamic and doesnt go round corners like its compact brother. The A was tweeked to be the pinicle baby AMG, the CLA is just there for buyers who can't quite stretch to a C63 but need more space than what the A offers. It's a tad pointless imo since the A only comes in with 4 doors. The CLA looks nice, but why pay more for less

It may be known as 'the Beast', but can the 355bhp Mercedes A45 AMG overpower the BMW M135i and Volkswagen Golf GTI? Steve Sutcliffe finds out in the biggest hot hatch shootout of the year.

That's unfortunate about the M135i's steering, and lack of proper suspension tuning.
Those are 2 MAJOR systems in a car related to enthusiast driving and the cars capability.
Great engine, but we've known that about the N55 since it came out a few years back.

I'm really looking forward to the new 2 series for the US market.
And I am hoping they fixed the poor suspension tuning of the E82 135i that I had.
But, the review here doesn't bode well for BMW having corrected it, and the steering is now lack luster, where it was just fine and very BMW like in my E82 135i.

The GTI has always been a great little car, and this reviews says that the new GTI is more buttoned down and better suspension and steering than the M135i.
The only issue with the GTI is that it's lower powered.

Interior looks very nice in all 3, but of the 3 the BMW is the most lacking and bland.

I don't like the AMG sedan that's coming to the US, but I do like this hatchback, much more so than the 1 series hatch.
I've always like the GTI's styling.

Some say the AMG shouldn't be compared to the M135i but more to the 1M. I can see that argument.
I'd like to see a new shootout with the BM AMG, BMW M2, and new
VW Golf-R, when it's available.

The most surprising car here is the GTI as it's way down on power yet still manages to keep up in terms of handling, ride, and appearance.
For a lot less

Let's hope the 2 series gets the tuning right, as it will get an electronic steering assist, and it's not so great in my 335i Msport.

On a separate note.....

The fanboys and their excuses are funny. Maybe BMW should stop throwing ///M's on non-///M cars so the brand and image can stop being tarnished and watered down and destroyed by AMG.

Mercedes takes their AMG brand and offers an even more stunning and exclusive option with the "Black series".

BMW takes their ///M brand and waters it down and cheapens it so every BMW made has an ///M steering wheel and shift knob that they can charge fanboys thousands for their "M-sport" edition. Sad really.
