I thought it had LED...?

...so apparently the Fxx has not switched to maintenance free LED's (are LED's actually that?).

It has...at the front. That page you linked to looks to me to be pre LCI since it talks about xenon as option which is definitely no longer available on the F20. Nevertheless you are right in that most of the rear cluster is still incandescent bulbs. In fact I think the bit you show in your pic above, the glowing tail light bars is now actually LED but the rest isn't.

At least the fronts work great. I love my headlights.

Here is the same page for an LCI car: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=63_1643

I presume you are talking about a new build as the one in your sig is most certainly not LCI! Real OEM lags with build data by a month or two so the database may not yet be allocating your VIN to the correct files. Notice your link doesn't say LCI whereas mine does? Either that or your 'new' car was built last year

Also, the shape of the light kinda gives it away

Anyway, the pre-LCI also had (partial) LED tail lights together with xenon:

I assume the LED 'bulbs' are integrated into the housing and aren't expected to need replacement. Hence they don't have a part number and don't show up on RealOEM.

The rear cluster of a 1 Series with Xenon headlights is red LED tail lamps, and regular incandescent bulbs for brakes, turn, reverse and rear fog.

From your photograph, it appears that the brake light has blown. If so, then the whole light assembly won't need replacing. We're talking about a regular, commodity P21W incandescent bulb that can be bought at low cost from any automotive parts shop. You can even replace it yourself if you're handy with a socket wrench.

You can buy aftermarket LED bulbs that fit the incandescent socket. However you will need to perform some coding to suppress the bulb failure checks. I have done this on my F20 for the turn signals, mainly because I like them to be as bright as possible.

Not touching the brake on the picture so it is indeed the led component that has failed.
