Audio - what are the options?

Every used example I keep coming across has the base audio system and I hate it.
I heard the HK and that sounded great but would probably cost a fortune to retro fit right?

So my questions are:
1. Can an aftermarket amp be installed easily or is it the usual where you'd be better off ticking HI-FI as an option?
2. How easy is it to add a sub? I'm going to hit the search button to check.

Thanks

I wasn't happy with the basic spec audio either. I got a local company to install a sub in the boot which did improve the sound a lot. I've never got around to installing tweeters though as I first intended as I'm happy with how it currently sounds. After comparing my car with a friends who has HK, I personally couldn't tell any noticeable difference. The company charged me £80 for the install. (£60 labour and £20 for a component that was needed) I supplied the sub and wiring kit.

Hope that helps

The base audio is in desperate need of tweeters. I had a quote from the dealer for the alpine retrofit. More than 1000 gbp for supply and fitting. It is not a bad upgrade unless you agree with others that bass is also lacking. The HK is too expensive to retrofit according to the dealer. It has left me stranded in making a decision. I could have it all done as an aftermarket install but I don't have time. I e-mailed one company claiming to specialise in BMW installs and they told me that all of their packages were online but the website is so poorly designed and none of the packages make sense in relation to the F20. Coming from a car that has HI-FI with updated speakers and a sub in the trunk... Base audio would be a step backwards.

You do know that the std f20/1 audio has subs under the seats right? If you think the bass lacking then maybe you could upgrade those.

Personally I haven't got a big problem with the std system. Yes it would benefit from door pillar tweeters which is apparently not too tricky a fit as I believe the plugs are in place but it's not like it is crap without. The fact that they crippled the f20 HK install with the analogue link makes me a bit meh! towards it to be frank.

That might need some heed: Alpine Hi-Fi Retrofit Burnt Smell Inside Cabin.

Alpine Hi-Fi upgrade is reported really good and cost-effective. Not exactly cheap though. The installation manual links are there in the thread above. Connecting looks very simple. For me, the stopping issue is cabin dis(/re)assembling: I'm not ready to do it myself (even no manual available) and I'd hate them to wipe their floor with my trim. "Fortunately" my previous car had a really crappy factory sound so the current basic one sounds well (not amazing, of course, but acceptable) by comparison. I guess I'll save the money for the next car's factory H/K (or just some food at least ).
