Thanx for you thorogh write-up. I do agree in most of your comments, except that I have a diesel, so delivery of power is different. I find the car very well balanced and fun to drive, only a bit too soft for an M suspension.
I had to make a "panic stop" the other day, in a curve, to avoid a collision. I was really really impressed about the brakes, how smooth they felt even in that situation, and how stable the chassis and the rest of the car behaved when coming to that abrupt standstill. Since one of the reasons I traded my former daily driver was to get a safer car, I feel assured

Nice review Meanie, and nicely specced car (that's a lot of extras!).
What dealer do you use in Joburg? I am in Cape Town, and my usual dealer here is only getting a 125i with M-sport line in August, so haven't been able to look at, or test drive, one yet. Like you, coming from a 130i (albeit at the coast where I can really get the full beans out of it!), and looking at getting either the 125 or M135. Tough choices! Quick question, did you consider getting the standard cloth/alcantara trim with your car, or was it always going to be the leather? (I see there is another Saffer on here with a similar dilemma...) |

I am dealing with BMW AutoGlen (www.autoglen.co.za). As far as I can remember I was there yesterday just confirming all the necessary details with regards to my order and saw that they had 3x 125i M Sport vehicles on the floor. For me I personally would not look at the 135M, at a base price of +R500k I think it is a bit of a waste. With all the extras one needs to add (Xenon, Adaptive Running Gear etc) you would land yourself in either a high-spec 328i M Sport or a reasonable 335i M Sport spec. As for getting the cloth/alcantara trim I did not even consider it, I have always had leather in my cars and personally love the overall look to the cabin with leather. Hope that helps!

In germany that bunch is: - M Sport package - Xenon - M Sport brakes - variable sport steering - 18" wheels - auto-AC - radio pro Compared to the german base-125i, thats options for 5660€, at a price difference of 9600€, which makes the 35i effectifly just 3940€ more than the 25i.

Wait, are you saying the 1M is cheaper than the M135i!? Or did I get that wrong?

Yeah, as 1thomas says, the M135i comes standard with a few items that the 125i does not. Interestingly, matching the spec I would take on the M135i with a 125i, the price difference is "only" R50,000 (517k vs 465k).
Of course, the arguments of whether you need the extra power, and 125i has the lighter engine, are valid. Then again, you can never have too much power, and the suspension has also been specially modified to handle the extra front-end weight in the M135i. I think I might stretch for the extra 50k. But that is a personal choice... And I just want to see an M-Sport line 1-er in the flesh first, nevermind the M itself. Of course, as usual, us Capies are a few months behind the JHBers! :-D |

I stand to correction however I think a M135i with a few extras will equal the base price of a 1M here - however I don't believe one can get any allocations with regards to a 1M anymore. However the point I was making above was with regards to performance.

Beside the fact that its hard to get hands on any 1M here, its listprice is ~50k€, while the M135i starts at 40k€. And the 1M also brings a bunch of options.

Oh I just noticed, the price went up a bit, and its even officially on sale on the website. But dealers will mostly tell you to check for used ones .
Just for completeness: F21 125i baseprice: 30250€ (F20 +750€) F21 M135i baseprice: 39850€ (F20 +750€, xDrive 44k with automatic) E82 1M baseprice: 51500€ Both M-Models bring a bunch of options making them quite attractive compared to their slower non-M-counterparts, being F2x 125i and E8x 135i.

Hi Meanie...what a great collection of BMWs!
The only option you missed, I think, was the rear parking camera. |

I'd like to throw some confusion into the mix here
I test drove two cars before ordering my car; a 118i Sport with M Sport Suspension and Variable Sports Steering and a 118d Sport with nothing. Apart from the huge difference in responsiveness from the throttle there wasn't a large amount of differnce between the two. The steering and suspension setup on the other hand was far superior on the 118i. It felt far more planted and confident and the Variable Sports Steering was a work of art and joy to drive. There is a beautiful sweeping bend near the dealership that gets tighter towards the end and joining a dual carriageway. At no point did I need to make more than 1/2 a turn of the wheel and the more speed I gathered the more natural the turn felt. I joined the dual carriageway at *caugh*sensable*caugh* speeds without a single problem. The whole time the steering felt just as it should, I could feel every abnormality in the road and how much grip the front end had. I hadn't even thought about ordering it before my second drive but had to after |

Just a quick update. She has FINALLY docked and arrived at the main BMW Depot (Rosslyn). T-minus 7 days till I get my baby! Already got a few BMW Performance parts waiting at the dealership to be fitted as soon as she arrives:
-BMW M Performance Black Kidney Grills -BMW M Performance Carbon Mirror Caps -BMW M Performance Spoiler Kit and Fins (Going to get them painted black as recommended by many other people on the forums) -BMW Black-line taillights -BMW iPhone 4S adapter (sucky about the iphone 5 adapter port though) Still wanting to add but want to see the car in the flesh first: -BMW M Performance Exhaust (Not sure if Akrapovic is doing something here) -BMW M Performance Steering Wheel with Display -BMW M Performance Side-skirt stickers -BMW M Performance Suspension (Not sure if this will work with M adaptive suspension) -BMW M Performance Engine Pack (When it is released next year or might just look at an AC Schnitzer kit) Getting so freaking EXCITED!!!!

Meanie.
Thanks for your review, I have only had my 125i M Sport for a day or two and already love it. Whilst it is no M3, It does provide a great balance of power and handling with lots more practicality. In regard to the colour, I am very happy with the Estoril Blue. It appears to look clean even with a film of dust on it. (see the pics I posted. It had dust all over it from the quarry) |
