What's bmw's best ever diesel?
I have been thinking about this for a while now and if I am honest I don't have the knowledge to answer this is detail so was hoping someone would be able to discuss and then perhaps it will make an interesting topic.
Here are my thoughts, since about 2005 I had always heard the 120d, 320d etc was the best engine out there I think it did something like 50mpg and 0-60 in like 8 seconds. Just amazing for a diesel for 10 years ago! Then there was the 123d 200bhp that had a beautiful twin turbo engine. There was the 330d that's incredible on paper. There are so many great engines. What are people's thoughts on there best bmw Diesel engine? |

For me, it's a no brainer. E90 LCI 330d with the 6MT, not the 6spd slushmatic. That was the most refined and most powerful/efficient 30d of its time and always had a real sense of occasion to it, especially past 2000rpm. It sounded almost like an N/A V8 yet got near enough 50mpg no matter if you cruised it or abused it. And with the 6MT, it wanted to go sideways, everywhere.
35d was slushmatic only, otherwise I trust the 35d would've been even better beyond 3000rpm. The new 30d of the F30/F10, etc is too refined. It operates effortlessly, pulls even stronger than the E90 and returns greater mpg but it's not got as much character. I'd still more than happily take one, but would miss the gruff sound of the E90's N57. The new 35d is xDrive only in the F30, so it won't win for me again, though it is an even better motor. Unarguably, the M50d is the greatest iteration of the N57 and quite unique with a tri-turbo setup. The 20d is a superb all-rounder and the revised N47 in the new F25 LCI is sure to be a pearler of a motor.

Totally agree in the 330d. Are you talking about the updated 330d that came out with the facelift?
Tell me more about the m50 though, hadn't heard of that which models is it on? |

That engine does look amazing. I read that the M550d won't be coming to the UK until the next generation 5 series comes in 2016. Real shame as the car has 3 turbos, more talk then I have ever seen in a family car, 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and 45mpg! Incredible engine from bmw, surely the best diesel ever from any manufactures??

The best diesel most probably will be the one that best combines frugality, low end take up with small delay in boost build up, capability to rev and refined sound while the TCO is still bearable for an average Joe.
The 30d will probably take that crown. The D3 of Alpina is some kind of miracle engine also and the delta in price is acceptable! The M50d is seriously overpriced, but technical a masterpiece. The 35d in the 3 matches its performance and beats its frugality, at a much lower price. When you're on a budget (like me), the 20d is the ubiquitous choice. It's not refined and the high end torque is fading too early, but as a daily driver it's a good compromise. |
