My First BMW Breakdown

Drove from my home to the local town for shopping as usual (6 miles) got out of the car and noticed an oily trail.

Looked underneath and the oil was pouring from the rear of the undertray.

No oil on my garage floor but it starts from a point where I reverse out of my driveway, seemed to drip on the move and pour out when parking.

Low oil light was not on when I stopped but it was when I turned on the ignition to check mileage after a litre or two had drained out while I was parked.

I'll know more once the car has been inspected so I have a loaner from Enterprise for now, a 12 plate 3 series diesel.

Cars eh?

Sounds exactly what I went through - an enterprise 320d M-Sport Auto courtesy of BMW Assistance because of an oil leak (albeit from my differential not engine!)

I had a completely new diff fitted - took about 3 weeks to arrive from DE.

It was dark when I collected the car and debadged but it's a manual and an SE I think (No sports seats).

I'll have a proper look at it tomorrow when I go out to clean up the cul de sac, I just hope a neighbour has some absorber I can snag.

It's an Enterprise car, 12 plate 25k and I did notice the OBD saying service - 7000 miles in red so overdue and it reports the key fob battery needs replacing.

Used and abused I think, it sounds "Chainy" as well lol.

Mine was also ragged. Can't say I didnt rag it myself mind... I also didn't take notice of speed bumps.

I'd never buy an ex hire car!

I treat them gently tbh even park on the end of a row just like I do with mine as I'd rather not pay the insurance excess for damages.

This one is a 316d, and as unexciting as you would expect but not really bad.

Just had a call, an inspection has identified the point of failure to be the rear crankcase housing oil seal, parts are on order for overnight from Germany. Once the parts are offered up to the engine the techs will be able to better identify the reason as to why the failure happened.

Update:-

It was actually a cracked oil plate (Sump) repaired under warranty and all seems well.

Happy days, hopefully.

I know many manufacturers who wouldn't do it under warranty... Try and say it was due to road debris or something and thus not claimable.

I must say in my book BMW score well on service ... Just not 100% on reliability.
