Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond in ITV talks

For those who are interested what Clarkson and co. might do next ... seems they are in talks with ITV (British commercial channel - essentially the number one commercial channel in Britain) :

Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond in ITV talks

If this does happen ... I don't think they would have the same free hand with production, as they had on the BBC, since it's a commercial channel ... ie. they can't say "this XXXX car is rubbish", right in front of a commercial break for said car

I have a feeling Clarkson won't go anywhere that restricts him from speaking his mind. Top Gear was so massive I imagine it would be pretty easy to replace unhappy advertisers, they will be climbing over themselves for access to that viewership.

Yep ... you raise a fair point there. The viewing figures that the future show would command, would likely yield a high price for the prime advertising slots ... come what may of his personal opinions being aired.

In fact, for the first few episodes of said show, he is likely to be directing any verbal detritus at the BBC management, rather than any vehicle manufacturer.

A relationship with Netflix would be the best if it could ever happen. Huge viewership, deep pockets, 'no' restrictions.

If Netflix couldn't afford Seinfeld (due to the rights to Friends), they can't afford Top Gear.

Netflix bought the rights to all Friends episodes for $118 million. So they passed on purchasing Seinfeld and Hulu scooped it up for $180 million.

I don't follow your logic, since the topic at hand is developing a show, and not buying broadcasting rights...

Netflix already has rights to broadcast Top Gear. I already watch it on Netflix.

Running its own show, like house of cards, is a whole different animal.

The numbers are irrelevant.

I wouldn't be surprised if Clarkson retires and we see May and Hammond anchoring in different shows.

I do not see this. At least not for some significant time period. Hammond and May already present other shows in the UK ... Albeit intermittently.

I think that Clarkson has too much fun with these guys, to pass on churning out a few more car based shows.

I doubt it, they both failed at take a shot at their own shows already. The people who pitch these new shows, obviously have no clue why top gear and those three together were successful, it only works that way, it would not be good when you break it up or change the person. They are all type cast at this point.

I did kind of like Hammond new show call the "Science of Stupid" on Nat Geo, it focused on why stupid people failed to understand the science of what they are about to do and why they were destine to fail from the start.

It is simple, if you are a car company and you want to advertise on the top rated show and you are afraid the hosts will rip your product apart, just make a good product then, problem solved.

This is the problem in the US markets, advertise and people not to speak the true about their products.

1- It is not simple.
2- Top Gear is not a show about cars, but about general entertainment.
3- It's not about making "good" or "bad" cars, as all cars are good and bad, but about people believing in propaganda. You can't make people not believe in propaganda.

So if you're gonna have someone bitching about your product for no good reason, you better be worried people are gonna buy into that bullshit. Most people (90%?) cannot think for themselves.

Hopefully they will land a deal with someone. Maybe the silver lining in all of this is a proper test track and not a converted runway ;-)

Trivia...did you know the TopGear track was originally a Canadian Air Force base built during WWII?

Most tracks in the UK began as RAF runways. Brooklands and Silverstone amongst them. Brands Hatch and Aintree were not though.
