3mm spacers
I am changing wheels and need to put 3mm spacers on the front for strut clearance. Can I use the OEM wheel nuts or do I need to get longer wheel nuts? My car is an M135i.
Thanks in advance. |

Typically it's best to always get the correct lug nuts to go with the sized spacers you plan on running. However, I think rule of thumb is typically if you can get 5-7 full turns of a lug bolt/nut, then it should be ok.

Personally, I'd want to fit longer lug bolts, especially on a car such as the M135i. Yes, I'm conservative but I've also seen original length lug bolts shear when spacers have been fitted. Why risk it for a few dollars?

But don't get too long lug bolts either. They can easily interfere with things behind, like the hand brake. Been there, done that. When I had several different wheels, some with spacers, and some without, this was a nightmare. It was difficult to find the perfect length for the bolts, and I ended up converting to studs on my previous car.

I feel your pain, had similar situations before. Anyway, 3mm is fine with stock bolts. And indeed, as ovekvam says, don't use too long. Tested it once, because I didn't have my stock bolts nearby. On my MINI I wasn't able to rotate the wheel if the bolts were too long! |

I've done 5mm on stock lugs a bunch of times never had any trouble , 3mm you'll be fine.
That being said I ended up going with a stud kit later on to run spacers and not have to worry about changing lug size when running larger spacers on my e92, plus makes lining up the wheels way easier, always an option! |
