F20 Brake Disc Rusting 2 Months of Ownership
I've had my F20 since late June (May build). I noticed last month the brake disc on one wheel was rusting. I took some pictures today, what should I do? I am very annoyed at this if I'm being honest.
All and any advice is appreciated! Thanks

Go for a two-minute drive. As long as you use the brake a couple of times, the rust will go away.

This is after the car had gone on a 10/20 minute drive (son is learning how to drive).

I think the brakes on all cars look like that after being left overnight with wet brakes. If it doesn't go away immediately when you drive the car, maybe your son is too careful with the brake pedal?

It's perfectly normal, discs are ferrous metal and the fresh surface revealed after braking will oxidise very quickly when wet.
Washing my car takes me around 1.5 hours including drying and if the discs were shiny when I started, by the time I'm done they are brown, it's that quick.

Brake disc rust is absolutely normal, will brush off under normal braking.
What annoys me is the rusting around the brake rotors and callipers, both do not have any discernible effect on the function, but they're not seen as cosmetic parts so BMW doesn't consider it an issue. This is not BMW specific. |

yes, it's very normal after the car wash and when you haven't driven the car for a while in a moist environment. That's why it's good practice to take the car for a 5-10 mins spin with some hard braking to get rid of the water and moisture sitting on the brake parts after car wash.

Get some wheel sealer on there, dirt sticks less and it just about hoses off.

I had a N54 135 and when the lease was up I got an F20 135, have not changed anything and over the first winter of having the F20 under the car cover the rotors rusted and made it feel like they were warped when braking. Took it to BMW and they told me that it was environmental and not covered under warrantee and it would be $1700 for all new pads and rotors. The N54 sat in the same spot for 3 winters without this happening, so keep an eye on it.
I had the F20 rotors put on the lathe at a BMW dealer to not spend $1700 and in the past 3 months the rotors now feel warped again. I'm going to try and get them to replace them now because I haven't let it sit for more than a day and was told the rust build up was from it sitting for more than 2 weeks without being driven. Just letting people know and to see if other have had this problem as I see the 135 as a fun car not a daily driver altho it could be. Thanks |

All the cars I have owned have had rusty brakes if I leave the car overnight with wet brake rotors. It takes one hard braking to remove the surface rust.
Rotors actually becoming warped is very rare. When they appear to be warped, it is usually buildup of brake pad material. This can typically be removed by running a brake pad bedding procedure. |

Something I was thinking about whilst driving an auto loaner, I found myself sitting on the brake quite a bit in urban driving. I suppose it's not as much of a risk due to the low speeds but still can't be good for the discs long term.

In this situation, you will typically also get som pad deposit on the rotor, often visible as an imprint shaped like the outline of the brake pad.

Then again I also still can't get my head round the electronic handbrakes in Audis - if the power fails does the brake fail-on or fail-off? if it's parked on a hill and the battery dies does it roll down hill? or is it just impossible to bump start it or drag it onto a low loader.
