Squealing brakes.

Hi All,

Does anyone else suffer brake squealing when coming to a stop from a slow speed? I get it both in dry and wet conditions.

I have taken the car to the dealer and they said there is no issue and put sort of lubricant on the pads. It seemed to solve it for about 3 days, now it's back. ðŸ˜*

Yep, same here! It is a common issue (the Technical director in my dealer has a 116i and has the same issue) and from what I have been told, lubricating or cleaning the pads only solves it for a few days or around 500 kms. Still waiting from BMW to change the pads.

No pad squeal on our F20. I have however had it on previous cars, using more racing oriented pads. My experience is that it helps to take the pads out, clean the calipers for dust, and put an anti-squeal sticker on the back of the pads. When your order EBC-pads, these stickers come with the pads. It looks like a thin rubber gasket with adhesive on one side.

Had the same issue last year. Currently I have 75.000km on the clock and the front brake discs have been renewed at 50.000km. Dealer said this is not very regular but not strange as well, depends on your (sporty) breaking behaviour :-).

Mine does it too (only on the rear brakes). I have the M-Sport braking upgrade, does it just affect those or are the standard brakes squealing too?

I have the 118d M Sport but standard brakes. So I guess it's another visit to my dealer. Has anybody successfully got them to replace the pads?

It's only gentle breaking 10mph to a stop over around 10mtrs.

EBC pads? Surely BMW should rectify this under warranty. What with the rusty rusty seat bases being replaced on my F30 and now this, I will soon have my own parking bay :-)

Yes, the EBC brake pads was just an example. I guess BMW could also add such rubber stickers on the back of the pads.

I just noticed this squeeling today, first day of winter with -16 C. Hope its just because of the cold.

Car has gone over 6000km without this issue.

Same problem for me!
We talk about in another post.
According to my dealer it is due to the parking brake. They tried some lubricant but it did not work at all. Also they asked me to drive with the parking brake on for few seconds to reset the pads. I do not feel confident in doing so.
They told me they can not do anything about it and if I cannot cope with it I should better engage a gear for parking...
I hate people watching at me when I brake, I could wake up the whole district when I brake...and I paid extra to have the m sport brakes

But it doesn't make sense that the parking brake makes the noise. It is a seperate system, and how could the noise be related to you pushing the brake pedal if it was the parking brake? If it was squealing also when you don't brake, it would have made more sense.

It is indeed strange but when I do not park with parking brake, this noise is gone... At least when I tried it. I will recheck tomorrow...
Are you sure that the 2 systems are fully independent? Is it also the case on m sport brake?

No, I don't know for sure, but it has always been like that before, on older BMWs. Hydraulic disc brakes, and cable operated parking brakes implemented as drum brakes integrated in the rear brake rotors.

My 116i has 2500km on the clocks and brakes squealing too.

Dealership has agreed to change pads on warranty - apparently a recall on all f20s.

If it's a recall every dealer should know about it and the F20 owners going for a check up, so if that's the case the word will get out fast.

Hmmm strange, now i noticed that i only get the squeaking in the beginning of my ride. But still only during very soft brakes and from 10-0km.

Its just annoying but maybe there is nothing actually broken or something so dunno what the dealer might say.

Maybe it will solve itself?
