how do you get a discount off list price on a BMW 1 in the UK

A few days back I went to the main dealer and asked for PCP contract (no part-ex) and a discount of the list price. He gave me a total of £48 off, great but not enough, I asked for more but they refused even if I added some attentional optional extras, servicing and shine protection.

I tried another main dealer and they had all my details already in the computer and refused to discuss prices unless I was ready to put down the deposit of £500. Worse still I asked them to price my own car as part ex-change and they under valued it by £1000, VW offered 8250, Ford offered £8000 and Audi £8000 but BMW offered £7000ish but again he wasn't going to discuss this without the deposit first.

Out of interest webuyanycar offered £8360 for my car an Audi A3.

How much discount should I be looking to achieve on a BMW 118d sport standard spec no metallic paint? Anyone got any tips or tricks for getting the list price down?

8% off list price. Some people get more. Don't trade your car. Make sure the BMW garage is not related to the other for price wars. Unfortunately cause its now 2013 they won't discount as much at the start of the year as they do at the end.

Just worked it out and my local dealership have offered me 0.5% if you ask me that is an insult. I think the problem came when I told the dealer his car looked like my ginger step child, you love them but its just not right, lol. Of course that was after the 0.5% discount he offered. Buying a car should be a happy process and so far its not been.

I will pop into bristol dealership tomorrow as that is a rival dealership. I am I correct in thinking they won't have my details in that dealership. So given this time of year should I only expect around 5%

I got 9% off list price + options. And an additional 2000 euros for the Brussels car show. So in total 12.5% off, in Belgium.

thanks for everyones input. I will be nice tomorrow and see what I can get.

Already Audi, VW and ford have offered £500+ off the list price without any problems so I am guessing me and the local deal must have just not have hit it off. Will keep everyone informed tomorrow.

My first post so I'l be quick. I went to a dealer, having pre chosen my spec online and gone thru the online PCP finance calculator, i had a rough idea as to what my monthly payment would be. I was, after some brief haggling by the dealer, told they could offer me a better dealer discount than what I could achieve online. He gave me a print out of my PCP proposal to take away and mull over. I then went home and managed to recreate the exact proposal online that he told me was 'dealer special'

So, after all that, I am very sceptical as to actual discounts we are supposedly offered.

I also got around 10% off here in belgium. Went to 2 different dealers and both of them offered nearly 6% straight away, at the first intend to buying a new car. When I had made my mind up I just pushed some more to get to 10% off.
Maybe they offer less discount in the UK as the base price is allready very low. Just compare your prices on base models to Belgium prices. I know that for an M135i its about €5000 difference..

i got just over 8% off the bat, but worked hard on my part-ex

i was more than pleased considering it need a load of work doing to it, all alloys were dinged, and had a less than stellar service history... £1300 more then i was looking for in the end

Got lucky and found a dealer that was fiercly rival with another local dealer, and i 'made up' an offer they had already made me... trlololol

bertybassett, the dealership is not taking you seriously. For whatever reason, they do not think you are actually going to buy. They probably think you are still looking round at various cars etc.

To be fair to them, they get this a lot, if they spent maximum time with every customer they would lose money hand over fist because of all the chancers. You need to come over as a serious buyer ready to do a deal.

I can walk into my dealership and the guy will happily spend the whole day with me test driving cars and discussing options if i want. That's because i have built up a relationship and a track record of buying BMWs, if he didnt know me from Adam, i wouldnt get that sort of attention.

The discounts only come out when the deal is ready to be done. Otherwise they know you will just walk away and get another dealer to beat what they have done.

Here would be my advice. Use the configurator on the BMW site to work out exactly what car you want. Then use the finance calculator on the site to work out how much it would be with no discount. Then take 10% off the list price and work out what the finance will be per month. You can do this exactly using Excel if you know what you're doing with APR calculations, but just a rough ball park guess will do.

Then take a print out into the dealer, say you want that car for that price. Now use their own sales closing tactics against them. Say you're willing to put the deposit down right away if they agree to it, but if not you've been speaking to another dealer and you'll see if they will be prepared to do it. (Make sure it is a different dealer, i.e not another branch of the same dealer).

Stick to your guns, stay in control and walk away if you don't get what you want.

If when you tell them what you want, they go off into a backroom to discuss it with the manager, you know your close, otherwise they would have just said no right off the bat.

Don't be fooled, when they are discussing it, they are probably talking about the football, they know exactly what discount they can give you they just want you to think they are trying to get you a really good deal.

It's all about the way you come over. If you have confidence and look like you know what you are doing, you'll get a deal. If you look like you're not ready to buy, or will just give in and accept the list price, you'll get the list price.

Do you mean he offered £48 after the Dealer Deposit?

Dealer Deposit is actually provided by BMW not the dealer. The dealer's margin isn't effected by it and therefore they can still give you thier discount on top of the deposit support from BMW. Don't let them tell you otherwise.

@JonF1982

You hit the nail directly on the head. They think I am just poking around and not a serious customer but the problem is I nearly gave up on the whole process of getting a BMW.

Going to print out the figures from the web site and take an ARP calacutor. All I want is £500 off the price (is that too low) then I would put down the deposit. Going to go in with the deposit tomorrow and wave it in their face. Lets see if this gets them moving, will also try another dealership first and see what happens.

thanks everyone.

10% is the magic number for me.

If i was looking at a £25k car, i'd be pusing for £2,500 off. So i would say £500 is way too low.

Also don't let them throw any insurance products in to muddy the water. Tell them you want to negotiate on the car first. But, say you think you will want GAP, tyre and alloy insurance etc but will only consider it after agreement is reached on the price of the car.

At 10% dicount, they will be making almost nothing on the car, but they can make huge margins on insurance. So if you look like you're going to buy insurance, they will give you the big discount on the car.

Then after you got your 10%, just walk away from the insurance. Get it online for a lot less, or get them to price match the internet price.

Win win.

Do exactly as JonF suggests, I did back in May and got 7% off + service pack thrown in.. This was before the big discounts hit.

It's worth bearing in mind that the 1 series is the car with the least amount of profit in it for the dealer - from memory, they said 7% is all that can be made where as a high spec'd X5 can go as high as 50% so there's a real reluctance to give a discount - I went pre-registered (fully loaded) with £6500 off list price and it's only done 14 miles.

We got 8% off when we ordered last July. At that time 8% was about the maximum and that was pushing three different dealerships.
Since then people have achieved 9 and 10%.

As others have said beware of dealer GAP, Tyre Insurance and Paint Protection. They are money spinners for the dealers but better products can be bought much cheaper elsewhere.

Cheers

I have just ordered a M135i here in Germany and got 16% discount without any negotiation. Apparently 20% is not unheard of.

It may be worth your while purchasing here and exporting yourself.

Interesting... I wonder if it's possible to buy a RHD car in Germany?

I've always wanted to do a 'Euro Delivery' as the Americans call it.....

How much did you roughly pay if you don't mind me asking?

I think it should be possible to spec RHD perhaps at a premium though.

Base price was 44k Euro
Extras inkl servicepaket +8170
52170 - 8290 discount

payable 43880 Euro

so basically i got all the expensive toys and service for free
