Mercedes-Benz about to overtake BMW as world’s biggest luxury car brand

From Caradvice, Auto world news and Reuters:

Caradvice: http://www.caradvice.com.au/507060/m...ury-car-brand/

Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-bm...-idUSKBN1410PO

Auto World News: http://www.autoworldnews.com/article...%80%93-ceo.htm

Maybe BMW needs to take a long hard look at what makes MB so hot:

- Making their designs more interesting and dramatic
- Have a real halo car
- Stop making their 3 and 5 GT's
- revamp their M Division towards more emotional products

A the fuck men.

I can already see the long term effects of chasing short term monetary goals. A once enthusiastic brand becoming a bland washed out market follower. Doesn't it just suck when Benz is the more emotional brand over the years? Or the fact that even Audi has a better performing car. Maybe we'll see VW packing more luxury than BMW soon.

I'm such a broken record but I'll continue my bitching hoping that someone at bmw will listen or until I just completely give up on the brand and move on. I really don't want to move on.

Sales of BMW and MINI in the Americas decreased 13.5% in November compared with the same month last year: a total of 39,051 vehicles were delivered to customers in the region. Year-to-date sales of BMW and MINI vehicles in the region total 412,873, which is down 7.7% compared with the same period last year. While year-to-date sales are up in Canada (41,326 / +5.8%) and Mexico (30,871 / +13.2%), the exceptionally competitive market in the USA has seen deliveries decrease by 10.2% (327,711).

You forgot making cargo vans. MB has got them beat there too.

Surprised BMW was able to hang on for as long as it has been, they don't build nearly as many different models than MB does.

Did anyone read the new 5-series review in 'CAR' U.K.. Where they state the Mercedes E-class felt like a "tin can" in comparison to the 5-series on rutted roads ?

MB have been making vans and trucks for decades and these don't count in the tally for most luxury car sold ;-)

BMW's answer to this will be to build more FWD turds, and more pseudo-coupe/crossover/hatchback abominations.

More power to them. BMW sucks, I series is a joke, m cars watered down, and standard line are bland / cheaper in terms of quality. Audi technology and interior design is insane, MB killer motors and cool designs

Yup, luckily MB has the right idea and would never build a FWD car. Except for the A Class, B Class, CLA Class, and GLA.

Not saying that MB does everything right ;-). What I'm suggesting is that by diluting the brand from loyal fans and customers, and by venturing into bizarre segments (GT's), BMW are taking the risk of losing what's the most essential for them: brand loyalty. And every one of us who are involved in sales/marketing knows: it is much harder and costly to get a customer back after they leave...

Don't forget to drop the electrics too. Theres a new sherriff in town. And he and his epa head don't believe the climate change bs nor are they going to keep American oil locked up. Look for $1 a gallon coming to a station near you, and electric subsidies building bridges, not batteries.

BMW's lineup, save for the new 7, 5, and X1, is long in the tooth. To go along with that, they aren't any special to drive anymore. So what advantage does BMW have over Mercedes anymore? Benz used to be garbage during their Chrysler days, but since the release of the current W222 S-class every new release has been beyond solid inside and out. BMW needs to stop with the mediocrity. The bean counters have ruined the brand we have come to love.

I was driving my beautiful mint condition E90 yesterday (black on terracotta w/ burl wood) and felt saddened because the type of connection that car has to the road is gone from every BMW and won't be returning soon. The F30 has essentially the same interior as the E90 with slightly downgraded material quality, whereas the A4 and C-class moved forward with their redesigns. BMW is in a sad state right now. The only cars that would get my money are the M2 and M3/M4.

BMW Needs A Supercar for the R8, AMG GTS, and 911. End of discussion.

Last BMW

I have owned many BMW's but think my next car will be a Mercedes. Maybe I am getting older or the long term reliability of BMW's and expensive repairs is something I wish to avoid in the future. My car was in for a service and I overheard the dealer telling a customer his X5 needed $21,000 worth of repairs, I've had $6000 repair for a ABS computer at 70,000k, you hear of timing chain failures on the 2 Litre Diesel and BMW not replacing motors - not good.
Lucky they are nice to drive

I think this has already been posted a couple times.

The problem with BMW is they have gotten complacent and no longer push the buck forward. Their lineup is long in the tooth, their interiors are good but not as good as recent Mercedes and Audis, and they are no longer very fun to drive. I get sad when I drive my E90 and think of how no BMW will ever feel like it again. I never replaced it for that very reason.

They are playing to the lowest common denominator and trying to fool their core buyers with slick marketing that they still make the "Ultimate Driving Machine." No, you are more interested in catering to the average white collar suburbanite who has never taken the time to hand wash their car, detail the interior or exterior, or enjoy anything about a car besides its looks and badge. These are the types of people who dislike "feeling the road" when driving. Plainly, they aren't making cars for people like us anymore.

I've contemplated trading my M3 for a C63s in the future. The article is not surprising.

They have done a truly fantastic job making their line extremely appealing. I plan on leasing a C43 as a daily driver.

Still not considering an AMG car over my M5 though, unless it was an AMG GT...

I am not surprised. I have a stick shift wagon and there is not a single manual shift 4 door hatchback or wagon in the entire BMW US lineup, although there is outside the US. I suppose if I have to get something new it might be a VW R, which is nice but has too much weight on the nose, or maybe a 328 4 door with fold down rear seats. My wife has a 2013 4 door and the seat bottoms are thin and hard , the steering is too easy, and the 4 cylinder doesn't sound as nice as my E30 318i. So, there is nothing in their line up that really motivates me towards a new car.
