No doubt aquiring twin tail pipes for the F20 diesel is all about looks and being vain
Nevertheless it looks damn good. How big are they? To find the answer and compare them to other cars I went down in the garage and measured my own cars as well as a couple of neighbours'. I made the measures with a yardstick, it was half dark, so the measurements are not very accurate. Give or take 1-2 mm. I measured inner and outer diameter: 2005 Mini Cooper S: 42 - 68 mm, twin pipes 2012 BMW 116d: 55 - 67 mm, single pipe 2009 VW Golf GT: 55 - 70 mm, twin pipes 2012 BMW 120d: 67 - 70 mm, twin pipes, M-performance 2012 BMW 640i: 67 - 80 mm, twin pipes (one each side) Sorry for beeing a geek..... Nobody saw me when doing this

Hi all, I have been informed by my dealer that your warrantee is not effected if you buy and fit aftermarket twin pipes as long as they are the same mounting as the original pipe. He says that all the M sports have the same rear skirt so this would explain why yours was already wide. I got passed today by a black F20 118i M which had quad pipes under a Carbon Fibre skirt and had the M 18" alloys painted gun metal grey.
It appeared to have been done profesionally. I think it may have used a skirt from the current M1. It looked hottttt, unfortunately I did not have time to snap it. Hopefully I might get to see it again. |

Final answer to single or twin space for exhaust in the bumper
In another thread henry1982 commented that my "sneak peek" pictures from the day the car arrived the dealer showed only a single space for the tailpipe - contrary to what I have believed myself and so cleverly told you guys.
When I later got the car in my own hands they were sorry they had not recieved the twin tailpipes yet. What they didn't tell me was that they already changed the grey part of the diffusor with another one, to fit the twin pipes to come. This lead me to believe that's the way the car left factory...... without remembering my early picture. Thank you henry for clearing up in this matter! The non-M models come with the rear bumper in one piece, painted in body colour. To keep the costs down, they obviously cut the space wider to fit twin pipes, while on the M-sport it's easier to change the relatively small lower part of the bumper/diffusor. Especially since it is grey no matter the colour of the rest of the car. Sorry for the confusion I created earlier about single or twin space as standard! To sum up: All models below 125i/d come with a single space for the tailpipe, including M-sport. When fitting twin pipes you have to cut out in the bumper (bimmerman has a picture of it), unless you have the M-sport where they instead change the lower part of the diffusor.

I don't think it looks tiny. People moaned about that for ages after seeing the first pics, so I almost was afraid looking at it when the F20 was presented last september and I was at the local dealer. But IRL it may not be huge, but it for sure is not tiny. The twinpipes for sure look better, but in reality for me it changed from "must have" to "nice to have".

I think putting twin exhaust tips on a car with a small engine is quite comparable to putting ///M-badges on it. Both look nice, but promise more than the car can provide.

How does the M-performance sound in comparison to stock (125i if possible)? From what I have read the performance gains are not noticeable.

No clue about the 125i PP-exhaust, but I've heard its not a huuuuge difference too. But this thread is more about the dual-exhaust tip for everything but the 25's/35i . I highly doubt *that* will have any effect on the sound .

That's for sure! No difference in power or sound, but looks like serious business.
However if the PP exhaust were available for the diesels, I'd picked that instead.
