Exclamation Alpine Hi-Fi Retrofit Burnt Smell Inside Cabin

Hi Everyone,

I was away for a long time due to workload and then the military service etc. but nowadays I can find spare time to contribute on the forum again Last week I made the decision to retrofit alpine system and bought the parts right away. Retrofit kit P/N: 65412293994 and underseat bass left/right P/N: 65139210149-05 . Sound is miles away from the crappy base system, but the problem is whenever I turn up the volume loud, there is a smell inside the cabin minutes after. My guess is that it is coming from the woofers. It smells like a working electric motor getting hot. I am adding the pictures of woofers and some parts with part numbers If anyone wonders. Waiting for your feedback guys since I have 0 technical knowledge about sound systems

Can't help you with the strange smell your getting but I am interested in this upgrade.

I didn't think the kit came with under seat woofers? Did you buy upgraded woofers as well as the alpine kit?

Did you need any coding as well?

Hi Kitts,

Yes I upgraded the woofers too. Woofers are not included in the Alpine Retrofit Kit but ETK gives the parts too for my VIN.

The car has to be coded after the retrofit. Factory out head unit is optimised for the base unit which has no tweeters. Midrange speakers give most of the treble on base audio. After the retrofit, head unit has to be programmed from base to hi-fi in order to have a good sound quality. Hope it helps

Not exactly necessary:

From the picture you attached you have the Professional radio, while there is also the basic Business one. By the way, thanks for the explanation: I've been wondering why they require the Professional radio for the Harman Kardon HiFi while claiming the only difference between the Professional and Business radio (besides the price) is the display I find annoying. I just still have to add what you call "hi-fi" stands for "Harman Kardon HiFi" in fact: what they call "HiFi speaker system" has no tweeters either.

I just realised that there is another kit for the Business Radio, I got the sense that Professional Radio is the base unit because it is standard here in TR.

Installation manual for the kit with P/N: 65412293994 can be found in the link:

You're also right about SA674 HK system having the tweeters and SA676 not. But what you do with coding is selecting "Conversion" from the ISTA/P and then selecting "Base to Retrofit HiFi", so it is more like a special process for the retrofit kit. You do not touch the VO or anything else.

Anyone have an idea about the smell???

No there isn't: 65 41 2 220 058 is out of production, 65 41 2 293 994 is the replacement. Thanks for the update!

Not only in TR, but some still have the Business. I am one of those.

So do I. That's why I would avoid installing "SA 676 HiFi speaker system" woofers (65 13 9 210 149, 65 13 9 210 150?) with Alpine kit, like you did, as the amplifiers are different:

65 12 9 322 687 - SA 676 HiFi speaker system
65 41 2 344 065 - Alpine hi-fi system retrofit kit

I'm not sure this is the cause, I just hope this helps.

I have fitted the Alpine HiFi retrofit in the car and need to get the car coded. Just wondering how did you do the coding for the retrofit?

Hi,

Complete installation was done by the authorised dealer, they did the coding through ISTA/P system. Your dealer or a reputable garage near you should help you with the coding

Since my speaker broke I've decided to upgrade my stereo to Alpine.. ordered it today!
Is it easy to install? Do I need to remove radio? Does amplifier go in the trunk? Thanks
