how is the range calculated?

just curious about the onboard-computer when it comes to range/reach, how is it calculated? Is it based on previous consumption of last tank of fuel, or based on consumption during the last x hours of driving or... ?
Or does it actually have a way of detecting the quality of the fuel and makes an estimate based on that?

I usually have a look directly after I fill up the tank, and when I filled it up in different countries around europe I often had a reach/range of 1000km+ after a fill-up. Back home in sweden it says I have around 850km of driving untill it's time to fill up again.

The manual says it is based on your last 30km or 20 mile drive.
