BMW doesn't understand the point of the roadster. That is clearly evident by this news.

Sigh...

Owning 2 x z3 and 3 x z4 I think it's the end of the line for me to buy another z if this is what's being offered. Don't take the eye off the ball

I auto-x mine.
I was honestly surprised: my E89 in stock form was way better than I thought it was going to be. Of course running with RFTs was the weakest point, but I thought the car was pretty well balanced with DSC off. The understear one experiences in "normal" driving went away. Yes it's heavy - but with better tires and a bit of tossing around - I'm sure my 35i would be right up there with the Ms.

However, on a short auto-x style course, you're really not going to run into N54 cooling issues...

Z5 would be awesome. BMW styling and motor with Toyota electronics and components. That would be one reliable sports car.

Make it light with straight 6 motor and no turbo.

Looks promising and hope it delivers.

I would give two lungs and a kidney to see a modern version of the original "M Coupe" (1998-2002) which is to date still one of my favorite cars ever made.

Leave Toyota to the Jap-Snaps, I am interested in a back to basics german Z-Car.

Where the hell is the Z3 we have been waiting for?

Full fledged German

It might sound exciting from the cooperation line, but..... A BMW Z-Series with crappy-cheap Japanese parts it's a sad drop into oblivion.

Reliability? Give me a break!!!!
E85/86 and e89, might not be perfect, but I will rather visit the dealer more often than drive a Japanese rice piece of crap!

Don't even dare to mention junk wannabes like the Z06, ZR1 or the GTR. Unless you consider a carton shoebox a refined sports car.

I hope they release this as a sub-brand and not as a BMW, otherwise we all might as well flush our car keys into toilets and start migrating to Porsche and Benz.

A lightweight (emphasis on the lightweight, dammit) non-retractable hardtop / shooting brake sounds intriguing. Please keep it light; please keep the luxury items to an absolute minimum; please keep its DNA focused solely on performance and not convenience or comfort or technology.

Bonus points if it's naturally aspirated (a boy can dream).

We can predict how these car will built form the articles itself and actual cars.

For sure the engines will be turbos, BMW right know have only turbocharged engines... and with even more restriction on emission going on in the future years, NA engines are basicaly dead.

Z1 will be a MX5 competitor. Light car, FWD, not so high power.
For sure it will share the same engines as the Minis and 1er.

Z3 can be the replace of the actual Z4, same platform of the 3 series, same engines, etc...

Z5 can be really interesting, i'm a bit scared on the hybrid thing...
An M with CFRP, no electric powertrain and a V8 from M5-6 can turn into the fastest car of the brand.

Scott, where's the "even numbers for coupes and cabrios, uneven for others" nomenclature gone? With the z5 that logic is no more. Isn't it?

At Mosport e89 35i passed multiple Z4MCs on the track with ease, It's just much faster overall, even with the weight disadvantage. That was before I had the tune and coilovers added to the car. Now I pass corvettes.

It's not a bad track car by any standard, but it's a very misunderstood car. It's true if I knew i was going to track this often, I probably wouldn't have bought the E89. But having it right now it's been performing perfectly on and off track I honestly can not wish for anything else within the price range.

The MX5 is RWD and handles quite proper. If it were not so underpowered it would do a killing on the market (it already sales very well for its market).

I own a Z4 35is and am happy with it. Best looking car BMW make with a great engine.

However, I do wish there was an M model with the high RPM V8. THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE WANT!!! And although the market is small for this sort of car, it's totally expected of a 2 seat roadster convertible/coupe.

And BMW: what I DONT WANT is a TOYOTA. I don't see Benz or Porsche polluting their brand with a Japanese car manufacturer, even if it is to bolster their hybrid tech. Lotus did only because they were left with little option for the reliability of their engines and is one of the reasons I don't own one anymore.

Again - I buy a BMW because it is a BMW. If I wanted a Lexus or Toyota I would buy one.

Make a proper M model with the V8 that does the quarter in the low 12's and they will sell.

Exactly. BMW already has two hybrid drivetrains, why would it need Toyota's. BMW's series hybrid (basically a copy of Honda's design from the Insight) makes more sense for a performance-oriented car, Toy's parallel hybrid (developed from TRW's patented engineering design model from the early 1970s) makes more sense for a max low-fuel consumption vehicle such as the Prius.

You e9x M3 guys and your obsession with v8s.

When the s65 was announced, everyone was up in arms about BMWs departure from the straight sixes that made them so famous. Now it seems some people can't see it any other way.
