Question e38 roundel hood replacement

A friend is having trouble replacing the hood emblem. He said,

"As I said the base part of the new part (roundel) has 2 prongs whereas the existing base on the car has 4 openings for prongs. The odd thing is there are no corresponding holes in the hood itself. Maybe the best idea is to remove the appliqué from the new part and glue it to the existing base holder."

Does anyone have any input as to why the car as 4 openings and the roundel only has 2? I have yet to find a roundel with 4 prongs.

thanks in advance
