125i Flat Spot in Power?
Pre owned 125i with 40,000 km on the clock.
Whenever driving steady between 100km/h and 120km/h (in comfort mode) and then want to accelerate or overtake and slowly roll on the throttle, nothing happens? Only when i get to kick down does all hell brake loose and things start happening. Whats strange is that from a standstill it pulls great all the way through at quarter throttle. My wife has a 116i which does not do this. Car pulls nicely in whatever gear its in without needing to floor it. Anyone else experience this? Last edited by Rich@badger; 01-14-2014 at 12:30 PM.. |

I experienced a flat spot high up in the rev range 5500-6500rpm until i got past 10 000km , what i have found to make a big difference is unplugging the exhaust actuator , do this when you car is cold and the actuator open , exhaust note is better and pulling power from low down in rev range seems to be increased . I havent dynoed the car to prove this , but its worth a try.

Flat spots under gentle throttle could be a fault with the MAF, any indy can check it for you.

nope , im assuming your speaking of the f20 125i , the actuator is electrically controlled , looked under your car near the tail piece , you will see a black clip plug just unclip it pull it out so the connectors dont touch but leave it in the socket (looks like its just come loose) , I have scanned for codes thrown , but there are no faults stored in the ecu , and have had the car in for servicing without issues.

@tkburn - Yes, f20 125i.
Ill have a look and give it a try. More for the improved exhaust note than anything else (if it fixes the flat spot then bonus). I got a feeling its the MAF sensor thats causing the quarter throttle hesitation and the intermittent low idle issue as suggested by Bob UK. Can only get it into the dealership in 2 weeks time so will report back with good news hopefully then... |

Got back car from dealer. Had rims resprayed so they had 3 days to sort the flat spot. All they picked up was that the exhaust flap had been disconnected (threw a fault on ecu) i didn't want to admit i had done that to try fix the power issue!
So i kept my trap shut Tried to tell them its for noise suppression and not performance to no avail... Maybe its just me being too critical of the car and there really is no significant low end lag? I drove it quite a bit today in sport + and it was perfect??? I normally drive in comfort and it does kinda feel flat.... Especially when compared to the loan car they gave me for the last three days...335i GT.....no flat spots there!!!!l Last edited by Rich@badger; 01-30-2014 at 02:12 PM.. |

Its quite a funny story. I purchased it through BMW Autobahn's premier used cars. The sales guy only told me after the sale. Whenever i book the car in all I need to do is give him a call about two weeks before the car goes in and he'll organize a loaner/demo if available. Not sure how/why I qualified for this as my wife bought a brand new 116i through them and she never got this option. She's very miff about that
My eye was originally set on a GTI, however they're too expensive new and I nervous about buying a second hand judging by the way GTI owners thrash there cars. Also, its such a common car, there aren't many 125i's on the road so it stands out in traffic... My one has a few niggling issues, but nothing serious. Everything taken care of under the motor plan. The only real negative is the muted sound - something you'll miss compared to your C63... Its also really quick. I had a guy in a Chevy Lumina try overtake me in the suburbs - he couldent get passed me he even waved in acknowledgment when we got on the highway ha ha... If you can afford one, go with a M135 Attached is a pic of my 125... |

haha that's an interesting story. Surely don't get that with merc.. C180
The 125i would be for my son, i'll gladly keep the AMG You're right, we also looking at the GTI. Definitely is a good car but wow here in jhb beyond common. You'd think they're a lot cheaper than they are haha. What a good story on the lumina Son keeps showing me some pre owned M135i's beautiful car and motor and brilliant value but is still quite steep! Wow your car looks good, what you have done with the rims looks real good. Where was that done? Just a spray? |

Shew! Now I understand, 125i over a C63 confused me !!! Haaa.....
With regards to the sprayed rims. The dealer chose to spray them when the previous owner traded it in. Thats what got my attention. i love the color as it gives the car more of an aggressive look. It also doesn't show dirt and brake dust... I thought they were powder coated, but after a month of ownership I noticed the paint peeling in certain areas. Now this has been the biggest issue Ive had with this car, I've had to send it back twice in the 4 months I've had it. The dealer i think sends it to rim specialists. Its all covered under the motor plan so I haven't made a real fuss about it yet. I was also contemplating the Ford Focus ST. Good price for a hot hatch. Only available in manual unfortunately. Beemer more refined and better looking IMOP. From what Ive read, its the slowest (0 - 100) out of the beemer and golf even though the focus's engine pumps out quite a bit of power. My wife's 116i is a great car too. Nowhere in the league of the 125i, but the little motor is unbelievably strong. Try get a test drive and if you and your son like it then its also saving you plenty bucks |
