You want a mexican made car then go for it...your choice
VW's consumer scores on MX built cars have been consistently higher than DE scores, when comparing cars made in both plants.

I've had BMW's made in Germany, Austria, South Africa and the US, and the one with the most problems was the German assembled one.

The important part would appear to be where the engineering is done, maybe watch the old Top Gear about the Mexican sports car?

Assembly in Mexico from major assemblies manufactured in 1st world countries is one thing

Manufacture of engine in Mexico is a whole other ball of wax

Given that VW's reliability has plummeted in recent years, particularly the GTI which is now below average......

I'll take the japanese made Subaru hands down over the mexican VW

All of the VW components/assemblies manufactured in 1st world countries I've had have been great.....nearly all the issues I've had have been associated with mexican assembly or mexican sourced parts

This doesnt even begin to address the problems with VWoA vs Subaru if/when you run into issues.....VWoA is a nightmare....subaru is far better about addressing issues

In that light, doesn't the US GTI and R skip the dual mode injection that EU cars get? I'd heard that it had something to do with MX plant capabilities, which seems absurd, but a better explanation is lacking.

Golf R or GTI all day. I found the STI to be a massive disappointment. Your results may vary.

Honda/Acura are now using wiring harness made in Mexico. We are now having a huge jump in quality issues.

This is from a 6 month old car. Poorly assembled connector corroded out the pins going to the rear steer motor. $2k rear steer motor, $350 wire harness and 7 hours to replace.

Just my personal experience, but I've found that the STI is a more "raw" and enjoyable car to drive, but as a daily it gets overly rough and annoying quickly. The GTI or Golf R both are a bit more refined and are much better suited to daily driver use. When you want to relax and just get to work, they are very comfortable and refined in how they drive; but when you want to push it and have some fun they are capable as well.

Don't really think you can go wrong with either choice, just depends on what your personal level of comfort is.

Pretty much. The STI is definitely more raw and visceral, but it comes at a major expense to the refinement, comfort, and ride. To me, the STI just feels super dated. Like what I remember them being like 10 years ago. And 10 years ago, that was great. They shit on a lot of other performance cars at the time. But time doesn't stand still.

For the money they are charging, the car ought to have at least 350hp from a newer engine design. I know they have great resale and all, but come on. I drove one before buying my GTI, and walked away scratching my head. I thought the WRX was a way better buy. Personally, if I wanted something that rough around the edges and aggressive, I'd be buying a true sport coupe of some sort.

So found an E90 M3 with 50k miles for $34k. Might be able to talk them down to 31

New STI full loaded non-limited for 36k,. Maybe talk them down to 34k.

And new focus RS. They won't budge from MSRP. 38k

Which one???

I've had lots of VeeDubs... lots of folks crying the sky is falling and they do have their moments (e.g. coil packs)... I bought a Touareg new in 04' which was bottom of the quality ratings and it was bad first year, but all covered under warranty... in the 12 years since its had (other than brakes/tires/oil changes) cats and a fuel pump.. Yep, worst car ever has been pretty damn reliable over the last couple hundred thousand miles. Still drives and looks nearly new.

My current daily is a moderately modified 13' bug turbo. about $16k all-in with mods inclulding wheels, tires, suspension, exaust, intake and tune and its quite fun... My teenage kids don't squawk about riding in the back seat either... best car deal I've ever had and I drive the bejesus out of it, surprising lots of folks in the stoplight drags when my tires are still spinning into the shift into 3rd gear lol.

Had lots of Japanese cars too (including a couple Subarus), and if you like German cars, nothing beats another German car. Even a new MKVII GTI is a really nice car, but can have just as much fun even cheaper.

I haven't owned any of these, but given that daily driver is in your usage description I would say the M3. My feeling is that it will have the best balance of the performance and daily driving comfort.
