Anyone here use the Sport or Sport+ mode everyday?

Hi,

I have a 116d and prefer to use the Sport mode as often as possible. I love the extra pedal response and wish there was a way to put it in this mode by default.

Any one else here using the Sport modes for daily driving? I feel that the Eco mode is only suitable for long motorway cruising as it makes the car sluggish and un-driveable..

I have tried a 116d, and also preferred using Sport mode on that one. On our 116i, I drive around in Comfort mode most of the time.

I use Sport or Sport+ while driving around town but once I get on the freeway I toggle between Sport and Comfort. It seems to me that Sport just doesn't use the higher gears seems like a wanton waste of fuel to me, hence Comfort. That, and Sport makes it impossible to keep to the speed limit.

Eco works for urban driving too, it is just a completely different experience to Sport for those who want to make less carbons and save the polar bear. It also renders the aircon useless here in the summer. Possibly because I have a 125i I don't find it undriveable, just dull.

Hi,

In my case, only from time to time for fun . Everyday use: comfort mode.

Garage List
For commuting I mostly drive comfort with my 118d. When off the highway, Belgium has a lot of long straight 70km/h roads. It's not very comfortable to try and hold those speeds when your in sport and 5th gear. For example: when in 5th gear in sport, you have to push in the throttle 10% (just a little) to drive 70km/h. In comfort you have push it in a little further to reach that speed, which is a more relaxing position for my foot.

When I have people driving along, I often use ECO pro. In those situations I don't want to show off the car's abilities, but just have a relaxing drive.

I use sport (or sometimes sport+) for those smaller roads or other situations where I want to push the car a little further.

Sport+ is rather uncomfortable on those 70km/h roads, as the cruise control is automatically disabled. I also like to Eco Pro when the traffic is slow, as it makes it less annyoing when I'm also slow.

+1

I'm pretty much the same in my 120d. I find that in Eco pro its similar in performance to my golf 2.0 140 tdi that I had before, so this is sufficient for the daily commute, it saves me more fuel also. Every now and again I open her up on my commute and choose the appropriate setting (mainly sport, will try sport+ once my summer tyres are on and I'm not fighting for traction as much). One thing that I haven't tried is what the economy is like in comfort to eco pro on my commute, I keep meaning to see, as if its no different ill just leave it in comfort I guess. I also agree its a pain keep switching modes, I wish it's stay where I left it when I get back in; but I understand why they don't do that anyone else compared Eco to comfort for economy? There's defo a difference in how the car performs??!!

I mostly, have to agree with nicvw;13340478
I also use Sport and Sport 'manual' paddles whilst driving in and around town, but once I get on the freeway or an open road, I switch between Sport and Comfort (to save fuel).
Flick it back to Sport (up to 6th gear) if some brisk overtaking is required

Hello

I agree with nicvw aswell, in eco pro mode the aircon is useless, which means it is more beneficial in summer to drive in comfort mode. I only revert to Sport mode, my favorite when Im on the free way with some traffic ( In case I need to overtake ) or when I feel like embarrassing a GTI otherwise on the open road I put it in Eco to save petrol

Welcome to the forum jhansen! Where in norway are you located? Nice colour on your car, same as ours
On our 116i, i mostly use the sport button - even in slow traffic. That's because I feel less turbo lag then (in comfort there is a very noticable turbo lag), so when I change file or need to accelerate fast, it's there right away. I also like the sport button because of the extra "oomph" it gives - man it's fun to drive then! In comfort it gets a bit sluggish and slow. Sport+ is for slippery roads, when you're out to have a bit of fun!

I usually drive around in Eco Pro and comfort. But when I want the extra throttle response i go for Sport. I only use Sport+ when I want to have great throttle response and deactivate traction control.
All in all I use all of the functions regulary.
To answer the question. Yes. I use Sport almost every day.

I have compared, and there is hardly any difference in consumption between the two modes unless the Eco Pro mode makes you drive more consumption friendly.

Eco Pro wants you to change gears more often than comfort.
I think you get the most out of it with the extended instrument cluster.
Eco Pro also monitors how hard you press the throttle. If you give to much it wants you to lift off.
How much fuel it saves you must me measured. I have no idea. It is probably marginal.

Comfort mode is strange, doesn't work with heel and toe (yes, I do that even in normal driving, less wear on your clutch)

I do that too, and it works in comfort mode. You just have to step harder and longer on the throttle to rev up the engine. Since I usually drive in comfort mode (or DSC Off, which also defaults to comfort mapping), I usually overrev the engine when trying to do heel/toe in Sport+ mode. :-)

I used sport all the way in the summer (summer tyres). Then I switched to comfort when winter came (winter tyres) and I use Eco-Pro when it's more slippery or so.

It's working good so long, I had fun in the summertime (and look forward to change my wheels to summer ones again) and I feel somewhat more safe in winter.

(I'd like to say hello to all here, it's my first post after quite long lurking. I'll be posting pictures of my bmw as soon as my account gets upgraded and I'm allowed to do so.)

not really driven my car 'properly' yet, but i just leave it in comfort most of the time tbh..

coming from a 325d thought i might miss a bit of oompf, but it's completely fine for the type of driving i do

car will serve its purpose for a couple of years before i can get back into something a bit more exciting

Hi BGM
Why didn't you get a 125d or 125i in M Sport if you wanted something a bit more exciting

well, as with a lot of these things it comes down to money, but this time it was a self imposed limit.. basically this year is the start of me saving for another house, so i had initially started looking at switching to a ford focus, vw golf etc..

in the end though, because i get a car payment from work that is a 'use it or lose it' style, i decided to stick with the BMW brand and just trade down a bit. my car payment is circa £350 a month after tax, and i have been spending WELL over that previously.

So, i squeezed in the bits and bobs i wanted for £360 pcm and called it a day... unfortunately that meant a smaller engine than i would have liked, but meh.. it's no big deal. The economy is just another plus point really

with various other pinches elsewhere... it's going to allow me to save ~£400 a month more than i already did

student loan is paid off in Nov... so might end up switching out to another car next year maybe? or be a good boy and just pump the student loan savings into the house fund too... we shall see!!!
