Almost quit today

Ever feel like just saying "screw it" and walk out the door? Well, that was how I felt today. I'm bored, unchallenged, and just bored. After watching a short video on TedX about "following your gut," I had the urge to call it quit. I try not to make hasty decisions so I didn't. But really it's just a matter of time...

Has anyone done that? Just quit on the spot? I prefer to give the two week notice but almost walked out the door today. Hehe

No matter how bad....never burn a bridge.

Nor should you ever quit without having something else.

This. Walking out can and usually does come back to haunt you. Unless you're flipping burgers at McD's. But if you're in a profession and plan to stay in it, word gets around.

Don't burn bridges. But if you can afford it, give your two weeks' notice and there's a good chance they will nicely ask you to leave the same day anyways.
BUT, only do this if you can afford to not work for several months!

Agreed. Hence I didn't. Going to call up a contact and look into becoming a financial advisor.

A few years back I used to be a financial advisor, co-managed my own branch with a partner and I quit on the spot. Was sick of dealing with clients and home office so I resigned one day and sold my book to my partner. I guess grass is always greener on the other side.

It was that bad huh? What was it about dealing with clients that you didn't like?

Has anyone read "What Color Is Your Parachute?" I read about 70 pages in the last day or two. Going through the inventory yourself exercise right now. It's an Interesting book and supposedly has been around for about 40 years.

If someone cannot afford to burn the bridges, do not.

I've seen a guy who burn the bridge big time, and got rehired at a same company 8 years later from his ex-coworker.

Depends... I did that once, but only because I had a VERY crappy work environment where my sanity, finances, BS tolerance and happiness all yearned for something better. Everything that went on is in the resignation notice below.

TLDR: Religious fanatic with forced prayers, paying below minimum wage despite promising me $18/hr full time, extremely micromanaging.

I actually looked into attending his seminar last year. I read his book "awakening the giant within" as well. Thing is, I told my manager that I am willing to take on more responsibilities, willing to learn more/new things. Basically doing whatever it takes to move up. I don't think he took me seriously.

I did this once...,

I was 16 years old working at Olga's Kitchen. Apparently they had a problem with me eating fresh sandwiches all day in the cooler. Couldn't take it anymore and walked out.

It was by far, one of the most unhealthy things I consumed on a daily basis. It just tasted so good in my mouth. I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

My day job (running after my offspring) makes me often think could I buy a golden retriever and teach that to do my job. There are weeks when nothing new happens and I feel like holding my breath could be the excitement of the day while I go through a list of animals who poop, how much, why and where (boys have interesting way to understand biology to say the least) why the laws of physics apply in the given situation, how and why people die and my personal favorite: M3's (only E9x's, new generation apparently sucks) ability to light up its tires and burn the dinosaur chasing it.

Yup. Your life is pretty damn good.

Sometimes we all really need to put things in perspective and realize how good we truly have it. The things we complain about are trivial compared to what most of the world needs to suffer through on a daily basis.

I sometimes really think I live in a bubble.

When I was a kid I used to have lunch at an ice cream place down the street from my job. They made a great steak and cheese and I'd have it with a large chocolate malt shake. Tomatoes, mayo, and salt & pepper were my toppings. That was when I could eat like a horse and not gain a pound. That lunch would kill me today.

Agreed. And it's difficult but necessary to avoid patting yourself on the back when you see how hard life is for others when compared to yours. In many cases people make their own luck through hard work and education. But some folks just seem to have bad luck no matter how hard they work. My sister and her husband are like that. They had a pretty good life going until 2008 when the housing downturn happened right as they both suffered a string of hugely expensive medical issues. Suddenly they were scrambling to avoid bankruptcy. It's amazing how quickly things can turn bad.

Seriously, there's just something so magical about a steak and cheese. Although I have to admit, a french dip is a close second.
