Don't make this $500 mistake

As a long time BMWCCA member one of the benefits is a rebate on a new vehicle purchase. I've taken advantage of this twice before. Recently I purchased an X1 with the same intention. On the way to the dealer to pick up the car we decided to put the car in my wife's name. After all it's going to be her car so why not. Well no sooner do we get home with the car and I go to fill out the paperwork for the rebate. My stomach sinks as I read the paperwork. She is not a member. I scramble and sign her up as an associate to my account and I submit anyway. Well after three weeks today I got a letter from BMWCCA. Declined as she was not an associate for the requisite 1 year. Nobodies fault but mine. Hope you don't make this same costly mistake.

You can't change the title/registration to your name?

The original paperwork from the dealer must have his name on it to qualify for the rebate.

Sent a message to BMWNA and explained the mistake. $500 check is on the way! I'm more loyal than before since this was a miss on my part and they could have easily held the line and refused.

Relief, indeed. Would be worse if one was to wait for the 1 year mark to find out bad news. In Canada the rebate is 2% off MRSP, with a similar 1 yr wait member period.
I think that it is a great deal. Discount also applies to BMW Munich tours.

Glad it worked out, although I understand the feeling. I kept telling myself to sign up for it after getting my first BMW in 2006. I forgot about it so I missed out on the rebate when I got another BMW in 2007. I once again forgot to sign up in all of those years as well. I'm picking up another car in a few weeks so I might miss out on that one as well (it's not on the list of rebates yet). I finally got around to it and signed up 3 months ago just so I don't forget again. lol

I've been a member for years and qualified. It pays for itself in parts discounts. I got the rebate a year ago on my 135is. The issue this time was my name was nowhere on the paperwork. Only my wife's name was on it. So I signed her up after I realized the mistake and they said nogo. I just received the check today.

I have been a BMWCCA member for over ten years. I just bought an M235i. BMWNA said thanks for the purchase but no rebate for you. They haven't set up a rebate for the M235i but they will give one for the 228i?

Doesn't seem right.

That's a tougher sell. My car and myself both qualified. I just made a last minute mistake and put the car in my wife's name when she wasn't a member herself. Easier to say an innocent mistake (which it was) than for you where the car didn't qualify. In any event enjoy the car. That looks to be a sweet ride.

Great car. I just wish my BMWCCA membership had some reward. The car is very scarce in my area (none at dealership) so discounts are hard to come by. $500 extra off would have been nice.

Doesn't seem right.
It looks like there are other exceptions, in addition to the M235i, per their site:
"The X4, M4, i3 and i8 models are not included in the rebate program at this time." Also, "3 Series including M3 (E92 & E93 only)"

https://www.bmwcca.org/vehicle_rebate

I have gotten a rebate on all the BMWs I've purchased, but didn't recall so many exclusions before, though I am getting older and could've forgotten.

That is very good of them to do that. Normally, they have been very strict with the rules in the past.

Glad that you were fortunate, however for me it was all timing. April 6th 2013 I picked up my X1 35i and I knew it wasn't eligible for the $500 rebate. Low and behold that 5/1/13 X1's were eligible.....

Is there a timing requirement how long you need to be a member first before you can be eligible for the rebate. For example, can I sign up today and buy a car tomorrow and be eligible for the rebate?

Don't recall offhand but believe it is 12 months. Details are on the bmwcca site.
