Hello everyone! I have quite a noob question about the paddle shifters:

If I'm driving in auto and then use the shifters, it turns into manual gear changes. How do I return it back to auto without using the gear stick?

In my VW Passat, I just hold the Gear-Up paddle for a few seconds and it'll switch back to automatic.

If you are in Drive and not in Sport+, then it will revert back to auto by itself after a few seconds as long as you don't accelerate hard and you don't take your foot completely off the throttle.

You can also push the gear shift over to manual then back to auto to put it back into D
When you use the paddles in Auto, it will return back into auto when it detects a change of gear is needed or the revs have not changed for a few seconds (average 5 to 10).

As said, it returns to auto by itself after 10''....unless you press the paddles again within this time limit. Every time is 10" from the last time you pressed the paddle. Very clever box indeed

Thanks for the replies! I was tryin to avoid from moving the gear stick to manual and back. I'll try out your suggestions today

I have to admit though, VW have done this one better, because i can flip between manual/auto using the paddles, and it'll switch back to auto by itself.

but that's exactly what the BM method does too...

you have two options:

1. use the paddle to change up/down and then let it switch back to auto by itself after a few seconds, something like 5s

2. manually flip the gear lever to the left and back to the right (i used to do this when coming off a motorway for example)

the only case where the car does *not* revert back to standard auto automatically is if you are in Sport+ mode

No, it isn't. It's not exactly the same. It's hardly remotely the same. With the VW you can put it back into auto anytime you want without taking your hands off the wheel. With the BMW you can usually do it just by not accelerating too hard, but there are exceptions.

If you're rolling down a hill in manual, it won't go back to auto by itself as long as you're not on the throttle. Also if you're driving on a track (or as if you were on a track) and you only want to downshift manually braking into corners, and you want to get right on the throttle coming out of the corners again, and let the upshifts go automatically, then you'll have to jiggle the shifter left-right or vice versa. With the VW you can downshift manually and shift back to auto while going through the corner, all without taking your hand off the wheel. Well, I have to admit that I haven't actually tried this in a VW, but this is how I understand it works.
