Horrible!
It's much better the original design of the front lights.

I think this is just due to the way our brain/perception works.

Seeing the car first time and thinking that it is ugly was the truth at the moment you have percieved it.

After that you've been thinking along the following line: ... "well, at least the interior is looking good, hopefully it drives well to... it looks nice from the side view (exterior)... not bad at 3/4... The car is awesome... too bad the front and rear are not..."

Each time you tell yourself you like this or that about anything really - the perception of the subject under concidiration changes. It can go in both directions.

Just look whats done on tv all the time. You will never think that something is scary unless you hear and think about it a good few times. Then... you start percive something as scary or frightening. Big ass brainwash basically - nothing else.

As of the new 2012 BMW 1 Series, we are chaning our own 'initial perception' (too much of a BMW fans) and the car indeed starts to look better and better each time we look at it.

One can really bring oneself from the feeling that the car is fugly to the feeling that it is gorgeous. Nothing have changed really, but... now you got a different truth to live with.

p.s. I've just told you in short a secret of how one can indeed 'change the world'... shhhh... don't tell anybody

"A distinctive diffusor insert in Dark Shadow metallic on the rear underlines the sporting claim. Included among the total of two non-metallic and four metallic paint finishes is Estoril Blue metallic, an option exclusively available with the M Sport package. M light-alloy wheels in 17-inch – or at a surcharge in 18-inch – further reinforce the athletic appearance of the BMW 1 Series. Foglights and the Individual high-gloss Shadow Line round off the M Sport package"

Estoril blue! That's AWESOME!

.. seriously? I cannot believe this. This is BMWs ugliest creation to date. And i'm usually one to try to approach things from multiple angles and try to appreciate BMWs typical forward-looking designs. But this is not timeless. It's awful..

What kind of a commercial is that? I don´t want to hear anything about two brothers and their cars. I hate how all cars are pushed and marketed with some sort of lifestyle in mind. I buy a car to drive, not a lifestyle to sell and show of to others. I know, from a marketing standpoint it´s the right approach, but my god, it gets on my nerves.
I wanna know how fast it goes, how good it handles and not which brother gets laid more often and who works out where.

Let me take a wild guess, anyone remember the E60?
We came from the classic E39, to the one Bangle created into the E60, people went bananas back then as well.
But what happened, the fresh design of the E60 help up excellent, and meanwhile more conservative designed car's like the A6 recived more applause in the start, by the time it was two years old, it looked ancient, and like any other Audi.
Not so with the E60, who still looks pretty modern, allthough coming as early as 2003

And that was with a much more... seasoned buyer group than the 1'er is.
This is designed for guys/chicks in theyr "teens", and 20-30's i presume.

And like the X1, it has some more creative solutions regarding colour choices and obviosuly design language as well.
Don't get me wrong, i didn't jizz in my pants of these first pics, but after seeing a couple hundred of them, this is my conclusion.
It will be a sucsess, and above all, it will look much better live, and another thing while we're at it- the M package will likely improve it some more!
And be sure, it will find it's buyers, and even more so than the E87 ever did.
Much because of some extra space, the E87 was cramped inside, specially the backseat.
The F20 looks more mature, more premium from inside and outside imo.
Can't wait to see some in Valencia, and better, see this car live.
I agree with you completely. The Bangle era cars still look so good on the road and I remember how loathed they were when they were released. I believe the E63/E64 6 series cars look so good and still turn my head when I see one on the road. I think this new 1er is very modern and will sell very well.

Valencia Orange on this car is a smack in the face for the 1M in my opinion.

didn't get a favourable response across the pond either

http://www.autocar.co.uk/forums/t/18848.aspx

why do we have to put up with car designs that grow on us?
you think a ferrari owner has to say, "yeah i know you hate it now, but wait till you see it a few times, you'll like it then"
growing on you just means you are getting used to the looks
NOT that you like them
i got used to the E60's looks
still hate it
still think the older 6 series trunk looks like a cancerous growth
i can't imagine picasso or davinci saying how their works might suck now, but after a few sightings will grow on you

Actually in a way similar to the F20 especially the details around the headlights form a lower point at the top edge of the kidney grilles in the car's snout. Whilst the contours on the bonnet and at the top of the headlights form the upper form of the F20's snout.
Please tell me they didn't really design it to resemble a shark. I want my cars to resemble cars not sharks

I think a drop/wheels/tint can save the profile and rear.
But those headlights...
