First Oil change - 125i

BMW says first oil change is at 20000km. I think thats too long.
Can I change at 10000km myself and it wont affect warranty?

What oil does the N20 use and what brand?

I dont think that an extra oil change will void your warranty. After all, its pretty straight forward and you dont modify anything by doing so.
Bmw typically uses and recommends Castrol oil, longlife 5w30 or 0w30 in very cold conditions. Since you live in sydney, I expect its pretty warm over there, 5w30 should be fine for you.

All this said, I really think its not necessary to change the oil so quickly. If bmw states 20.000 km, be sure that it might as wel be 25. Or even 30.000 kms. Just make sure that the oil level is never too low and add some if necessary.
I think car companys and oil companies scare people about this oil thing to sell more oil/get people to going into service more often. Really, our modern cars can do quite well without changing oil so often.
On my previous e87 I used to do the maintenance myself and only changed oil ( and oil filter) every 30.000 kms. I also used a cheaper brand than the castrol whitch I find really expensive. It costs about €90 for 5l of castrol compared to €90 for 30l of the brand I used (marly). It works just as fine!

In the end, if you feel more comfortable changing oil every 10.000 kms, just do it, it'll cost you a lot of money, but it wont do any harm for sure.

In my old 130i i did every 10000km with castrol 5w30.
I was just told that keeping the new old would make the engine last longer and runs smoother.
So I shouldn't worry so much?

Exactly, no worries and enjoy your superb car
Just check the oil level now and then and top up if needed, nothing worse than an engine with low oil!
When the car tells you to go into service, then you go, not earlier

After 10000 km I had to top it up with almost a liter, as it was getting close to the low lever marker. The oil had turned black at the time. If I was paying for service myself, I would have replaced it every 10000 km.

I dont find it unusual to have to add a liter every so many 1000kms, I do that myself and it is normal for an engine to burn some of the oil over time.
It is normal that the engine oil in a piston engine gets black, I think that if you just did an oil change and add 5l of fresh oil, it will turn black after just a few 100 kms. The blackness of the oil is no indication to replace it.

I've even heard of people claiming the engine oil should never be replaced, just top up every now and then. Though I find that that surely cant be good for the engine, but just showing that replacing every 10.000 km is a bit exagerated in the other direction..

For me, replacing every 20.000-30.000 km or every 1.5 years, whitchever comes first, is the way to go. Making sure the engine is never running low on oil in the time between, off course.
Just so you flush the system after a reasonable amount of time/kms and to make sure that IF somethings wrong with the engine, you notice it in time (e.g. Small metal particles in the oil filter or on the magnetic chip detector which is in the drain plug)
Btw, an oil filter can easily last 2 oil changes, so you should only replace that every second oil change. After you've checked it and made sure everything is ok off course.

I know quite a lot of car enthusiasts, and I have noticed that the ones who replace the oil (and filter) more often than recommended, have significantly fewer engine issues as the cars gain high mileage. If you sell the cars at 100 000 km, there is nothing to worry about, but when the car has been run 250 000 km, the maintenance matters.

The cost of oil and filters is a very small part of a total car budget anyway, and can save you money in the long run.

No problem to change the oil, it will not void your warranty. Also, you can have BMW service change it for you. I changed first oil at 7.500 kms and then I change every 10.000 kms (did so with all my BMW's and the Mini). I use Castrol Edge. We had a few people in the Greek BMW forum who send their oils at blackstone labs for an oil analysis after they changed oils...in all cases that oil was almost worn out after 15.000 kms. At 10.000 kms it had some life left in it and at around 25.000 kms (2 cars) the oil was pretty much useless. So, I concluded that around 10.000 kms is a good time to change oil....just my personal opinion.

I do it myself! The BMW service costs too much! One change on the dealer can cost like 3 oil change by myself.

Here in Greece, I do buy my own oil (Castrol Edge costs 10 Euro online and BMW dealers charge 19-21 Euro!!!) but I take the car to an authorised service. They charge me only for the filter and no labour...so it costs me the same as if I did it myself.

Not only labour... I hope that 10 euro isn't for a full oil change? We pay around $90 for 5 litres of Castrol Edge.

You are right...I did not clarify it, in my post. I mean 10 Euro / litre. So for 5 litres, I pay 50 Euro + 12 Euro for the filter and no labour.

I looked at the car final options list as handed over to me by the dealer at the time of ordering the car and noticed there was marked an option of 30,000km / 24m oil change. I will look again and post the code number for it for you to see. That was the final configuration list confirmation from BMW Germany to see when the car will actually enter production so we could calculate the delivery time.
