M gear knob F20/F21?

Hi Guys,

Anyone knows if there are retrofit M-gearknobs available for the F20/F21 series? I find the original gear knob a bit too high after having had an M-sport E87 before.

RealOem shows some:

You can buy the M Performance carbon/Alcantara gear stick from BMW

It is £132.50 from your local dealer (in the UK)

Its not just expensive, but also ugly . I never liked knobs being so free of any form like this one.

I think thats not really "his" wheel, more just a screenshot captured from BMW's Performance-trailer. That is the BMW Performance steering wheel with shift-lights and a display.

Oh and before you ask: This thing will set you back 4-figure-money. BMW germany asks 1299€, airbag and labour not included.

I find the M-performance stick a bit over the top for my 118D. The M-sport edition is just right!

I am very happy with the F20 but a miss out a bit of sportiness that my E87 118i had. The shorter knob is very much contributing to that (you actually hold it everty minute). Also I liked the small side mirrors more and the sport steeringwheel has not the thickniss of the previous one which I liked so much..

So lets go retrofitting!

If available..

^^ What he said

As for the gear stick, I actually quite like it.. Think it needs to be seen in the flesh to appreciate it.

I have seen a lot of those perfectly round shaped knobs. Performance, Alpina, Schnitzer. For any kind of BMW model. I never liked a single one. I do need the proper "shift knob design/form", or the new joystick for the autobox.

Unless installed in a racing car: That steering wheel looks horrible!
Luckily we all have different taste, that's why cars never get boring

I prefer round steering wheels, but the performance edition is flat in the lower section. That is probably fine in a formula one car, but if you have a car with more than one turn from lock to lock, it is not such a good idea. It can cause you to miss a grip.

Be careful, the seller specifically says "no shipping to other countries than germany or austria" in the text.

Found a vendor for the M-sport gearshifter (Bimmerparts), price for OEM piece around 140€.

But seeing the pictures I start doubting; is it actually shorter than an standard F20 gear shifter? Can anyone confirm?

Also the new M-pack shifters are not having the perforated leather but standard leather.

Just installed the M gear knob in my F20 118D and put it on youtube:

Quite easy to install, just pull the leather wrap-around away from it by pressing the sides. Then pull the gear knob with a lot of pressure untill it pops (mind your head!). Replace it. Then pull it firmly down till you feel it popping in.

Happy with it, but it is not a shortshifter as my old E87 118i M-sport had, it is still a bit higher. Visited a BMW dealer in Amsterdam and saw an F20 M-sport but noticed it having not a really short shifter. Too bad.
