Torque and power indicators

Does anyone know if the torque and power indicators are connected to some physical sensors or is it just a piece of software connected to the fuel injection for example ?

Thanks

I am pretty sure it is just software based on readings from the regular engine management sensors. They are available on the data bus in the car, so it should also be possible to make a feature like that on a smart phone app.
