Warranty Questions

Hey guys maybe you can help me here. I recently started looking at some M3s, X5Ms and one X5M caught my eye due to it being nicely priced and having the BMW warranty still active. The 4 years 50k miles to be exact. My main question since the car is not being sold at a BMW dealership is would it be possible since under warranty from BMW if I can purchase extended warranty from a BMW dealership?

I don’t think so. They will offer you what ever warranty you want but under a different company. If you want full warranty and service plan you can buy both but it will cost you a lot more. When I bought my CPO from the BMW dealer they just offered me extended warranty form a different company.

Ahhhh interesting so do most extended warranties that bmw sells are third party?

I think so. I don’t recall ever being offered anything but third party along with the CPO. I think you can have your car covered in every way like the original warranty as long as your willing to pay.

The better answer is to have your local BMW dealer CPO the car. It usually cost about $1500 and extends the warranty to 6 years 100K. The dealer can CPO it even if you didn’t buy it from him. I would talk to them first before you purchase the X5.

This is a good option if they let you do it but depending on the type of coverage you want. CPO doesn’t cover everything so read the fine print on CPO and the 3rd party warranty.

I purchased my car from a private dealer and it still have the original warranty left (like 5 months and like 2k miles). I took to the dealer and got my extended warranty options. I ended up getting a third party warranty (MAP) instead of BMW Platinum package because it was cheaper by like $1.5k. And like around 52k miles, the car was leaking oil (found oil in the garage) so I took it to the dealer, they fixed it, gave me a rental and I only had to pay like $50.00 (invoice was like $3300).

I recently shopped extended warranty options. Local BMW Business Manager provided many options from BMW Platinum to a few third-party options, with the third-party options being significantly cheaper.
We also discussed CPO options, he laughed and stated that they (BMW employees) often refer to it as ‘CP-No’ due to the many exclusions on a CPO.
Bottom line, as long as you still have the factory warrant, you can purchase a BMW extended warranty option. The older the vehicle and higher the miles, the more the warranty will cost. They don’t budge much on the BMW Platinum but I was able to get $500 off the listed price.

Good luck!

agree with all this above. just bare in mind that it's in the dealer's interest to sell you some kind of extended warranty because he will get paid at the going rate by whomever carries your insurance, BMW or otherwise. you're doing him a favor as much as he is you, makes for a better negotiating position.

Op.....Try Alpha Warranty Services. When I purchased my BMW a few years ago from a small auto broker he offered me a extended warranty with this company. 3yrs and/or 85,000 on top of existing mileage. I don’t drive much so this was sufficient. Price was $2,800.00, and it was well worth it. My plan Priority One protection covers just about everything. Worth checking out.
