I dont know if there are any Official statement about this. I think we have to make a group, and send BMW an email about this. Gather all the guys that have the problem, and make more F20 owners to have a look at their car.

Sounds like a good start.

The only thing a single customer can do is keep nagging their local BMW dealer to fix this. This is what I´ve been doing since November when they looked at it and said "ok we will fix the rust but there is no solution from BMW yet". So I am sending an e-mail every 4-5 weeks asking for an update.

I was told that a solution has been found and they are awaiting instructions from Germany. My car has been in the workshop for over a week now (fixing other issues as well)

Edit: can't seem to able to upload my picture from the phone, I'll do it tomorrow.

The problem is that they have just kept the surface as it is.
I think if they painted it or something the problem wouldn't exist. Because they have painted one of the hinges from factory, and that one doesn't rust, but the other hings rust..

A recent post on the F30 Forum indicates that BMW now have a kit to fix the problem with rusty seat components.

Did you get a copy of the work order? Would be nice if we could have some BMW numbers to show to any dealers which are trying to avoid the issue.

I found a FRU Codes of "52990000" "Replace both front seat frame plate." The SA said they received the parts so they could start the replacement.
Hope it helps.

I have this.

Is there an internal BMW recall or fault number I can give them as its a known issue.

I just called my local BMW service and they were clueless about it.

Just waiting for the service dept to contact me to discuss the rusting issue and have mailed the salesman at Stratstone Chesterfield with these pics. Not as bad as some on here but the car is only 10 months old.

I'm guessing from the replies and fixes some people have had that any new cars (i.e. currently in build) - shouldn't be affected by this? Surely this is more of an aesthetics thing anyway as I doubt it would progress much more than slight surface rust.

I would like to think that was the case but how many affected seat plates would have been in parts stock yet to be used? Worth keeping an eye on even if you have just ordered a car imo.

Yeah it's cosmetic, not structural (unless it eats through) but really shouldn't happen on an internal surface to my mind.

I don't think that plate surface is load bearing anyway! Purely cosmetic. The hinges are what we should be concerned with! (Mine has rusty hinges and plate)

I think the issue is they forgot to galvanise the seat frame, and the cushion makes it a magnet for moisture

Only true solution is to replace both seats which won't happen!

we had a recall in china (both F20.F30), dealers will replace the rusted parts for you(very quick,2-3 hours done). Dealer said this problem was caused by a long way shipping on the sea. Maybe it's correct, too high humidity, but it means BMW didn't use the right material on this parts. It's surprising that some cars driving in Europe also have this problem.

Our car has never been anywhere with high humidity, and it still has rust under the seats. I think it was a problem on all cars produced at the time. Maybe they have solved it by now.

Mine is going in on 22nd Jul to have both front seat frames replaced - contact dealer, supply photos and they refer to BMWUK who should respond with a dealer specific authorisation number.

The dealership is also replacing the timing chain, guides and tensioners so will have the car for a week while I buzz around in a 114i loaner.
