What should the next 1 series fix or address
Now that many of us have had a longer term relationship with our 1's, what would you like to see BMW do with the next 1 series?
What design characteristics would you change, and how, if you could tell BMW what to do, so that you would get another 1. This is for the day to day 1 series, not an M variant, which has it's own threads of desire. In realistic terms, what needs to happen? Here is what I would like to see in the next 1 series: My list is extensive, but realistic. Exterior: -Body changes. Keep the nice tight body proportions and even the general shape, but REMOVE the pot belly pig line and look of the mid-section. The rear looks great, so be minimal there. -A refined front end, more evolution than revolution, perhaps some deeper and wider splitters built into the front facia. -I like fog lights. -Dual exhaust, at least for the hi-po engine variant, 135i. FIX the damn side windows with real and FUNCTIONAL rain gutters/channels. I am tired of getting soaked when I use the windshield spray and wipers when the windows are open! Perhaps stop with the frameless doors that have the "ooo, ahhhh" effect, but allow all kinds of dirt and debris into the door only to end up streaking dirt and grime on my windows only a few minutes after I've spent a couple of hours cleaning the car. Interior: -A real and adjustable arm rest that can adjust up and down, and fore and aft. -A standard central color LCD display to show controls for HVAC, Radio, Cell phone, car computer MPG, MPH, etc..., that does NOT require a NAV option. Bring some "luxury" tech to the interior. -Real brushed aluminum trim option. -Slightly wider adjustable side bolsters, and a bit more cushion to the thigh bolsters. -MUCH better head rest that can at least change angle, but would be better if it were like the 3 series vert headrest. -Cooler Tach and speedometer lighting, something along the line of the 3 series gauges. -With a central LCD display, more room to add coolant temp, oil temp, boost gauge, with a toggle to real tire pressure readout in numbers. -Better HVAC air flow. -A MUCH better standard audio option with subs, and enough power to jam at volume while driving 90mph with both windows open. I'm sure the vert folks would appreciate that. Oh, and add an EQ you cheapskates. Mechanical: -Suspension, suspension, suspension. Do it right. You know how to, ask the engineers working on the 3 series. -Shorter clutch travel. -Shorter clutch lever throws. -At least a bump to 320hp/320lb ft, with a power band allowing better, flatter torque curve into higher rpm range. -LSD, at least as a realistic cost option. -Taller 5th and 6th gear for the MT, or at least 6th for less revs cruising at high speed, and better highway MPG. -And NO HPFP failures. -High performance all season tire option with the sport packages for those who still have to drive in 4 seasons conditions. -Better next gen RFT's, or go back to regular tires and a spare and jack. I'd kinda like to see more "pearl" colors too, like a pearl white, blue. That's about it. To distill the most important: -No HPFP issue. -Suspension, suspension, suspension -Rain/water flow, side windows -Arm-rest -Base audio -Head-rest -Pot belly look, removal And TRY to not add more weight. |

I'm curious, when is the next version supposed to be out? Is the M going to be based on this body style?

+1 to the base audio
Really sucks to see that my '10 model base audio had no tweeters, while the older models had them. |

either way, we should be right around 3000lbs anyway. I'm sure the reason they don't cut more weight is cuz then they'd be selling more 1's and less 3's. |

There are plenty of flaws in the 135i but they are all minor. The 135i was never meant to be an all out sports car, it's a 1 series equipped with the M sport package with a bloody fantastic engine. Floaty suspension, RFT's, lack of LSD, louder exhaust etc - they are all things the ///1M will deliver.
The 2 things I'd like to see fixed in the next gen 135i are the HPFP and possibly easier ECU access! lol |

I thought BMW only put LSDs on M cars, meaning you'd have to move up to the next-gen 1M to get that. Plus I'm sure that would address the suspension issues as well.
I'd also add the headlights to the list. I like everything else about the 1 design (I don't even mind the cow-belly line), but the "startled cat" headlights just don't do it for me. |

LSD, non-runflats+stiffer M-tuned suspension, better sound system, LED angel eyes, and ofcourse fixed HPFP
That's it, seriously. Car doesn't even need more power, it is a blast to drive. And for those who say that B.S "bmw only puts LSD's in M cars", BMW also "vowed" never to go with forced induction on an M model, and also to never make an M SUV... Look at the X6/X5 M... Talk is cheap

@spiderz17: I agree! I wish the headlights were more "mean"/aggressive looking, like the ones in your avatar.
I am disappointed that I felt I had to buy the BMW Performance Suspension to (hopefully) get awesome handling. I thought that's what BMWs were supposed to be known for, but I was not impressed with the sport suspension, and really didn't buy a RWD car to get understeer. (Admittedly, I've only test driven a few times, but I drove an S2000 for six years, so I know what good handling is.)

This is my second 1er and I have a few peeves with the car, although minor.
1st, I really wish there was a practical way to disable the headlight washers. Ticks me off when I just finish waxing my car only to have fluid sprayed all over the hood, and in my 128 vert the fluid would actually go over the top of the windshield and hit the passengers in the face. I don't need them and I don't want them. 2nd, RFTs, 'nuff said. 3rd, the stereo could be better. 4th, an adjustable headrest. For me it sits too far back so I never use it. Not the kind to go to the track, I just do some occasional spirited driving, so the performance is more than enough to keep me happy. But I certainly wouldn't argue with you guys over any mechanical enhancements you deem important. EDIT: Oh yeah, the cupholders suck. |

1. Rear fog lamps on North American spec cars
2. keep the 3.0L I6 in the 128, and maybe bump the power to 260hp plus for those of us who enjoy the naturally aspirated powerplant. 3. A dipstick Audi lets you pay $20.00 for one... 4. Retain the minimalist interior. I like that my 1er doesn't have any displays or anything too fancy or distracting. I really do not like the idea of letting people read e-mails over a nav display while driving. 5. But if they have to go and make the next 1er all techy I hope they give it a heads up display because they are cool. |

The head rests bug me too, and I only just placed my order. My thought was to install a 3 headrest. Has anyone tried that to see if it works?
My list would be: 1) Better grab handles on the doors as the current ones are way too far forward to nicely control opening and closing the doors in windy conditions. 2) Put it on a weight loss program. ~200lbs less than the 3 is a joke given the size difference. There has to be weight they can cut. 3) Following on #2, don't start with the bloat. The 3s are pigs to what they used to be and the handle like it too, don't do the same to the 1. I would happily live without most of the modern conveniences for a "truer" car. |

Sounds like you really want "de-contented" 1 and 3 series, but BMW knows they won't sell in the US. So the real problem is as Walt Kelly said years ago: We have met the enemy and he is us!" Personally, I'd like to see with a temp gauge on both my 128i and 328i - even the old heavily buffered water temp gauge was better than nothing. Tom |

Honestly...BMW needs to separate the 1er and 3er pricing by a larger margin. And I don't mean make the 3er more expensive.
I agree with most of the wish lists so far...keep them coming. |
