116d or 118d

Hi all

Im new to the site.

I had my 2007 E81 118d SE stolen just before Christmas and just been sorted with insurance settlement so now looking to replace it with potentially a F20.

I am looking to potentially order an M Sport but money is tight and can't really stretch to a 118d which would be my preferred choice (same power as my E81 (143 bhp)).

Has anyone drove a 116d? Does it feel gutless? Im concerned that it wont be powerful enough (116 bhp) so don't really want to place an order for one 'just because I can't afford a 118d' especially if it is too slow.

I am not a particularly fast driver but like to know that the car is capable of overtaking with ease if need be.

Would welcome your opinions/views.

Cheers

Do you definately need diesel? A 116i might be within your budget and would be around the same power as your old 118d. With the increased economy on the new petrol engines, the high cost of diesel, and the difference in the cost of buying the car, it might work out financially.

No I definitely don't need a diesel as I only cover 12,000 miles pa but just concerned about the fuel economy of the 116i.

I was getting over 53mpg in my 118d so was looking for something similar in terms of power and economy.

What are you averaging in the 116i?

Cheers

Well its brand new so still wont be getting the best figures, but i got 45.5 on a 300 mile journey which was a mixture of motorway and a roads.

Rush hour jams no doubt will be down to about 38 ish

Ok lets do the sums at (40mpg compared to 50mpgs to make the maths easier)

12,000 miles @ 40mpg & £1.30 per litre of pertrol = £1909.36

12,000 miles @ 50mpg & £1.40 per litre of diesel = £1418.38

Over 3 years at those figures it would cost you £1472.94 more to run the petrol.

118d Sport £23,270
116I Sport £21,305

The pertrol would be £1965 less to buy, but cost £1472.94 more to run based on my estimate. Still works out £492.06 cheaper over 3 years and you have £1965 less to find to buy the car.

Again that's all just an estimate, but might help

Cheers for this, very useful I think.

I would be looking at getting the car on a PCP deal which is currently a 4 year deal at 4.9%.

The deposit on the car (116i Sport) is £500 and I want £1395 worth of extras.

If I am able to get 10% off the list price of a 116i M Sport that brings the car down to £20,259. Is this achievable?

But the resale value of the 118d would definitely be higher ,I have the same issues, (low annual mileage) but prefer the higher torque of a diesel , having said that I have driven the 116i and it is very good , just not the same "pull"

This is a really hard one!

The diesel will hold a better residual value and is also cheaper to tax and probably cheaper to insure. That's the reason I was edging towards a diesel.

Would I be dissapointed with a 116d as I don't really want to stump up a whacking deposit in order to keep the monthly payments sub £300.

10% off the list price of a 118d M Sport (the one I really want) brings it down to £22,028. Is it possible to get it at this price?

If this is possible then the price difference between the 116i Sport and the 118d M Sport is just £723. I am willing to pay that difference upfront. Add in the optional extras and the initial £500 deposit and that brings me to £2618. I would part-ex my low mileage 53 reg Focus (worth at least £1500) so I only have £1k to find.

Is it worth it over the 116i/116d?

If can cover the 700ish difference it then boils down to your personal preference. Drive both and decide accordingly whether can justify difference in cost.

Point re insurance, I think the 118d is a higher grouping than the 116i, though wouldn't imagine would make a huge difference to the premium. Probably covered by the variance in road tax, in which case stick to Jon's calculation re fuel and final payment value at the end of the four year period.

I'd say so yes. If you don't get it just walk away and go see another dealer.

I’d say the best thing to do is tell the dealer you want to test drive a 116I, 116D and a 118D. Take the time you need to figure out which engine you want.

They should be happy to let you do that.

Maybe test the 118D first, then the 116D, that will make the power difference most noticeable. Then see if the 116I is a good enough compromise.

Best of luck.

I am sick of doing spreadsheets and comparisons!

All in all the 118d will work out cheaper in the long term (4 year PCP deal) and will also hold a higher residual value.

The next question I keep asking myself is it worth £300 per month for 4 years (£14,400) plus the £2600 I would have to pay upfront (presuming I get 10% off the list price) and then after the 4 years not even owning the car??

Big committment in my eyes!

Yes, but then what are the alternatives?

If you want to buy a car for the same outlay, you're looking at a mid-range ford focus? or maybe a Golf with a steering wheel and some air in the cabin?

You could buy the BM. Then you would have say another £9,000 to pay? And at the end you would own a car worth £9,000.... Why not stick that £9,000 in your bank rather than into a car that is only going to lose value?

PCP either puts you in a car you wouldn’t be able to afford to buy outright, or lets you buy a car but keep the money in your bank where it is earning interest (not very much i accept!).

It also protects you against a big drop in 2nd hand car prices as you can just hand it back at the end if you want.

And don't forget, what ever equity you have in the car at the end of the deal is yours, whether you sell the car, settle finance and pocket the difference, or trade it in for another BM.

I totally see what your saying - there is nothing out that there that I really want. Don't mind the VW Golf GT TDi's but there will be a new one coming out soon and there will also be a new A3 due out. Wouldn't mind a 3 series coupe (320d M Sport) but the insurance is silly and again what would it be worth in say 3 years time??

I was paying £242 a month for the E81 until it was stolen so im used to paying for a car.

The insurance settled on £9965 and I owed BMW £6467 for the E81 which left me with £3347 in my back pocket but don't really want to put all that money down as a deposit.

Can I survive in the same car for 4 years?

Apparently the 4.9% PCP deals are only on offer until 31/03/12 so I need to make a decision and sharpish!

Well provided you have equity in the car, you could change it after 2 or 3 years if you wanted.

What about an E82 coupe, I bet you could get a speced up 118d for the price of a 116d F20?

And they might even be more flexible price wise given its an older car.

Just a thought.

Why not a 118d sport , with M sport suspension as I have, (£240 option)
I prefer the wheels and the look of the sport it's 90% of an M sport but a lot cheaper!

I prefer the look of the M Sport, especially the interior plus it comes with climate as standard. I also prefer the M Sport wheels and love the Estoril Blue paintwork.

Think I might just bite the bullet and pay a visit to the stealer and see what deal I can get on a 118d. Think if I went for a 116d I would regret it but the 116i may still be an option, the only thing that is putting me off is its value after 4 years.

If you prefer the M sport then that's the one to get, they generally hold more value as well, you really need to drive the 116i + 116d , but I had trouble locating dealers with different cars to test drive, where about in the country are you ? Don't get tied into
A long term deal on a car you might not be happy with ,after the novelty has worn off !

I'm in the north east. I'm going to rule out the 116d now as I won't be happy with the performance having owned a 143bhp 118d.

Will aim to test drive both the 116i and 118d and then go from there. How much more is a 118d going to be worth over a 116i after 4 years?
