Advice re buying secondhand F20 120d Sport

Looking to replace our Golf TDI with a year-old F20 120d. Is there anything particular to look out for? Any recalls that needed doing? Will be buying from main dealer, so I understand it has remains of 3 year warranty? Car has driver and interior comfort pack, so seems quite well specced.

TIA.

I got a 120d sport produced late 2011(november), haven't had any recalls. But I do have some of the common cosmetic issues like whistling noise from airvents, clappering in the rear suspension area.
Recently reports of rusty seat-frames have shown up, so you might want to have a look under the seats.

But you'll still have warranty so I wouldn't worry too much about any issues.

No real issues or recalls with mine... apart from a faulty passenger air vent mechanism.

As above, the BMW warranty is pretty comprehensive and haggle free most of the time.

I'd highly recommend the new 1er

Good luck

Thanks for that. It looks very good on paper and is nearly £10,000 less than list price when new - so fingers crossed.

I have had my F20 for a little over 6 weeks, and have had no issues whatsoever. I bought the car because it is a significant improvement on my previous E87 / 1-series runaround, and I have driven it more in 4 weeks than I ever did the car we retired - its that good!

The car is covered under a comprehensive warranty, BMW are very good at honouring reasonable issues in my experience both in and out of warranty, you will be in safe hands.

Take it for a test drive first. BMWs drive quite differently from a Golf: same weighted feel but more direct in road-feel and handling (no point complaining about a 'hard' suspension later) so ideally suited for keen drivers. The F20 has comparable inner/rear room so you should be ok. Like in every marquee, the car's spec can make a big difference - a well-specced car feels better to drive than some basic spec 3-series!

£10,000 under list is a compelling proposition for a nearly-new 120d. Good Luck.

Woo hoo!!! Thanks for all your feedback... I've gone and bought it this am It has remaining 2 year, 1 month BMW warranty. It drove really well - more direct and firmer than the 10 year old Golf TDI - which is good - I am a 'keen' driver (other car is a 12 year old 911) - so that's perfect.

Did a deal which works out better than £10,000 under its original list price (not that anyone pays list price), but still seems very good price for an 11 month old 120d Sport in Deep Sea Blue with 10,800 miles. Quite well specced too... . Has driver and interior comfort packages, front and rear parking sensors, auto dimming and folding mirrors. And rain sensing wipers (or maybe they're standard?).

Only problem now is I have to wait a week for it to go through the main dealers workshop and have a convenient time to pick it up.

Thanks again!

Did your dealer advise you that you can extend the Manufacturers warrantee by another 3 years (it costs a bit, but is worth it if you intend to keep the car). It has to be done during the last year of warrantee. I gather this is a BMW offer that is also available in the UK and Europe.

The catch is that all services done on the car have to be done by BMW during the original warrantee period

Not a problem for those of us who have been offered '3 year free service'.
BMW is currently offering this on new cars purchased before the end of Oct here.

OK - thanks. Will look into that. Presumably I can wait until the standard 3 year warranty gets close to its end, before deciding what to do?

We pick the car up tomorrow
