Resonance

Just refitted my summer tyres....i know it’s late..... I have a shudder the car that appears at about 80mph.....it doesn’t resonate through the steering wheel but seems to come through the car body itself. I have had the balancing on the rears checked but haven’t had the fronts done yet as I was told that If the fronts were out i would feel the vibration through the steering wheel. Any ideas? Stu

That is my experience as well. Unbalanced front wheels will cause some steering wheel shake, while rear wheel unbalance can be felt through the seat.

It is also possible to get some shake even if the balancing machine says zero grams, if the is some ovality. You can usually see it visually when the wheel is rotating.

It is also possible to have a perfectly balanced wheel mounted out of center, particularly if the center bore is too large.

How long have the Summer tyres been in storage, were they stored correctly?

Seems to me they may have become deformed slightly, giving you the shudder.

You been running Winters until now? I thought they were limited to 50mph and even if not would certainly be wearing like the buggery running on tarmac this long.

The minimum speed rating for winter tires is Q, which is 100 mph. Most are rated higher.

To be honest I only took the winter tyres off because I plan to take the car on holidays in couple of weeks time. I was running Michelin Pilot Alpin's and they just seemed to go on and on. I had worn them down to 3.5mm and saw no point keeping them for next winter.....excellent tyre though in all conditions.

As for storing the tyres overwinter they where kept in my unit. The unit is dry but unheated....they were only off the car for 7 months and were stored flat.
