Stereo volume randomly goes up and down in my 335i - anyone else?
The sound system in my '07 335i is good except that the volume will randomly fluctuate, which is really annoying. I understand how the logic system is supposed to raise and lower the volume based on speed. But this variation happens at random times - could be when I'm cruising at a steady speed, or stopped at a light. I've taken it in to the dealership 5 times for this issue and they claim that they can't replicate the problem. They may think I'm imagining this, but everyone who rides in the car notices it also. The service manager suggested that it might be an amplifier, but they can't take any action until their techs can verify it. I understand, but still frustrating.
Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, was it resolved? What was the solution? Any input would be appreciated. Philip |

does it sound like its changing volume or getting more or less treble. When my logic is turned on it sounds like its trying to process the sound on high notes and sounds really off/weird so i keep off

My issue doesn't just involve treble, it's definitely changing volume. It can be subtle, but still definitely noticeable. How do you turn the logic system completely off? I've seen the adjustment scale, but it only allows me to go to a '1', not to 0. Thanks.

Folks - I appreciate all the input, but this is a malfunction/defect - it is not a matter of adjusting settings. I understand perfectly how the Logic 7 sound system is supposed to work - raising and lowering the volume based on vehicle speed. I also am fully aware of the S-Vol adjustment on the system which controls the degree to which the volume is supposed to be raised or lowered. I have tried adjusting the S Vol control both up and down. The lowest setting that it will allow me to have is a '1'. I have not found a way (nor does the manual state, nor can my dealership service manager, nor can BMW NA Customer Service find a way) to completely disable the Logic 7 input. I do not have an I Drive, which may be the only way that one would be allowed to disable it. But I don't think that even that would help. One service manager has made the logical suggestion that it may be a bad amplifier, which makes perfect sense. But they can't replace the amp without their techs being able to reproduce the issue (unless of course, I want to foot the bill and forget the warranty).
As far as the other system settings go, I have adjusted the equalizer to many different settings - all to no avail. I am not sure what you mean by DSP vs 'straight stereo', as there is no 'surround' or 'DSP' setting on my system. If you're referring to the Cinema vs. Music setting, then yes, I have tried both, and neither makes a difference in terms of the random volume fluctuation. |

Does it only do this at loud volume settings? I have the standard US system in my E92 (not L7) and at high volume settings the volume fluctuates; I think either the amplifier is overheating or some other protection circuit is being activated.

Vadim - thanks for the suggestion. I tried that, and I don't hear the fluctuations as much. But I also find that the sound is much richer and fuller with the Music setting on. Without it, it's almost like removing the whole mid-range. I hope that that is not the only way to get rid of the issue. It still doesn't seem logical that the surround option should be causing that, if the system is functioning correctly.
Car62 - my problem seems to happen at all volume levels. I think it's more pronounced at higher volumes, but still noticeable at lower ones. But I agree that it sounds like an amplifier issue. Has your dealership heard the problem, and if so, what did they say about it? |

Click music button on and turn down your 'S-vol'. I leave it at 2.

It's probably speed adjusted volume, maybe an amp issue.

OP, it is probably the Logic 7 amp. My car has the same problem. You can see my thread here for more information. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=319983
In my case, the sound sounds "fuller" and "flatter", but it can sometimes sound like an increase in volume. My sound setting for the fader is 4 clicks to the rear and on that setting, I can really hear the fuller vs. flatter sound, rather than attributing it to volume increase/decreases. |

AcuraGuy - thanks much for the info. That sounds very much like my issue. It may well be a 'fuller vs. flatter', rather than a louder/softer issue. It looks like they replaced your Logic 7 amp with one from a CPO vehicle? Was this temporary, as you said they ordered your amp? Has the issue been resolved?

this was temporary so they could figure out the problem. They swapped it back out when I picked up my car, so I still have my defective amp until Friday. I'll let you know how that goes on Friday.

I have the same issue with Logic 7 in my E91 except the volume of the phone in handsfree mode is also affected. The ring volume will start out at the level I had set it for and then tapers off to where it is almost unrecognizable. Two phone calls in a row and the volume is completely different. Music volume fluctuates even when the car is sitting so I do not think it is s-volume related.

Thank god, I am not the only one that noticed this. I noticed this issue a week after I picked up my 2010 335i that comes standard with HD radio. I didn't have this issue with my 2008 135i. I finally figured out as mentioned previously that it was the speed volume control setting and I lowered it to 1, but I still have issues from time to time when I have the music relatively loud. I get a very loud distorted sound almost sounds like a broken sub-woofer. I jumped quite a few times when I first got the car because it was so loud. It is very annoying and I wish I could turn this feature off. I will try to ask the dealer, but I know they will blow me off; I will have to take them out for a spin and show them.

I said I'd give an update last Friday when my dealer replaced my logic 7 amp. The work order states that the concert and theater settings were turning on/off/on again. When amp was replaced, problem was supposedly fixed. However, I noticed that the varying sound from "fuller" to "flatter" still occurs on Radio under Concert or Theater setting. Seems to happen less and it is still not related to the speed sensitive volume. I need to call the dealership again to let them know that the radio still has issues. Not sure if it happens on the CD setting (haven't had a chance to test it out).
