Eco Pro Coasting - anyone got it?
Curious to know if anyone with a new 1er has it.
Look in Settings:: Driving Style::Eco Pro Config. I have a July13 build and it's missing |

No sure if there is a menu for it? As you say July build have it but it's pretty unnoticeable as the auto box disengages drive when you are rolling and able to cover ground through inertia/gravity etc..
Barely noticeable on mine |

[IMG][/IMG] Also, when you coast, via the split screen, it will animate, showing distance coasted, etc. [IMG][/IMG] BTW .. I'm convinced UK cars don't have this feature enabled. Last edited by modeller; 03-11-2014 at 08:37 AM.. |

No. Just the Auto gearbox.
BMW EfficientDynamics: ECO PRO Mode now with sailing function and anticipation assistant. Thanks to new functions for the ECO PRO Mode, which can be activated via the Driving Experience Control feature, BMW is increasing the possibilities of achieving better fuel economy through intelligent energy management. From the summer of 2013, all model variants of the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 6 Series equipped with the eight-speed automatic transmission or the eight-speed sports transmission either optionally or as standard, will feature the new sailing mode. At speeds of between 50 and 160 km/h in the ECO PRO Mode, the drive train is disconnected as soon as the driver lifts his/her foot from the accelerator pedal without applying the brakes. As a result, the vehicle is able to ‘sail’ without engine power, thereby also achieving maximum fuel efficiency.Fuel economy is now promoted even more intensively using the optional navigation system Professional. When the routing function is activated, the new anticipation assistant informs the driver of the ideal time to slow down when approaching bends and stretches of road where speed limits are in force in order to obtain better fuel efficiency. For the first time, BMW EfficientDynamics technology and BMW ConnectedDrive technology will be networked with each other within the framework of the intelligent energy management – with the effect that further fuel savings will be achieved in ECO PRO mode. https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/press...tem=node__4101 |

Wasn't there a post earlier about people having software updated at the dealer? Maybe that software update will enable this feature? I know I'm booking mine in next week to check that I have the latest software. Mines an 03/2013 build, in Australia, and I don't have the Coasting section either. I'll let you know what happens once I visit the dealer.

I was wondering this, it must simply be a soft wear upgrade for older cars as well? If you can code it you probably could code it so that it works in comfort as well as Eco pro!

That's nice, I don't have it, but then again, mine's from 2011 and have not been updated recently.Probably is a new feature added to the ECU controlling the AT, that could be coded if you have the car updated.

Hardware changes too I'm afraid. If you have a 0713 build or onwards, enabling it is straightforward with coding.

Coasting decouples the transmission (same as neutral on a manual) allowing the car to travel further without engine power. There's no engine braking.
Requires good anticipation to take advantage of! |

I don't quite see the point of the coasting. Since the engine is not adding any power, the energy of the car (velocity or altitude) will gradually be lost, and the engine will still consume fuel to stay running. Wouldn't it be just as good to just roll along in a tall gear, using the fuel to hold the speed for a while, and then go for a full fuel cut?
Our 116i has a manual gearbox, so I can coast whenever I want by shifting to neutral or just pushing the clutch pedal. I still see no benefit from doing this to save fuel. Seems better to coast in gear while engine braking at 100 percent fuel cut, since the engine braking capability of the N13 engine is almost zero anyway... |

However it is amazing how far the car just rolls when coasting in eco pro, I would say it takes 3 to 4 times longer to drop from 90Km/h to 80Km/h on the same flat stretch of road. But at the same time it uses fuel to idle the engine instead of using no fuel in the non-coasting state. So your probably not missing anything really without it except for seeing the needle drop to 600rpm whilst doing 100km/h |
