Carbon Buildup Problem N13 Engines?

I've been reading all of the carbon build up threads and how expensive it is to get the carbon cleaned out on 135i and 335i engines.

Many BMW direct injection engines suffer from an excessive carbon build up on the intake valves. The carbon build up can cause drivability issues such as stumbling, flat spots and lack of power, poor throttle response etc.

I own a 118i with a N13 engine , but I do not read stories (yet) that this engine also needs to be cleaned. Why is that it's also a direct fuel injection engine?
