Detroit 2015: BMW 3.0 CSL

BIMMERPOST NEWS
Detroit 2015: BMW 3.0 CSL

COMMENTS

The legendary BMW 3.0 CSL made a rare auto show appearance today at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

Some history via wikipedia:

In 1973, Toine Hezemans won the European Touring Car Championship in a 3.0CSL and co-drove a 3.0CSL with Dieter Quester to a class victory at Le Mans. Hezemans and Quester had driven to second place at the 1973 German Touring Car Grand Prix at Nürburgring, being beaten only by Chris Amon and Hans-Joachim Stuck in another 3.0CSL.

3.0 CSLs would win the European Touring Car Championship again in every year from 1975 to 1979.

Initially using the same engine as the 3.0CS, the 3.0CSL was given a very small increase in displacement to 3,003 cc (183.3 cu in) by increasing the engine bore by one quarter of a millimetre. This was done in August 1972 to allow the CSL to be raced in the "over three litre" racing category, allowing for some increase in displacement in the racing cars. In 1973, the engine in the 3.0CSL was given another, more substantial increase in displacement to 3,153 cc (192.4 cu in) by increasing the stroke to 84 mm (3.3 in). This final version of the 3.0CSL was homologated in July 1973 along with an aerodynamic package including a large air dam, short fins running along the front fenders, a spoiler above and behind the trailing edge of the roof, and a tall rear wing. The rear wings were not installed at the factory, but were left in the boot for installation after purchase. This was done because the wings were illegal for use on German roads. The full aero package earned the racing CSLs the nickname "Batmobile"

Enjoy.

The message of it? "Good BMW's were in the past"?

The only reason I enjoyed going to NAAS at Cobo Hall was to see all the spotless relics that companies would bring.... along with their newly designed bastardized lines.

Wish they would make a new mostly stripped out CSL. Not based on any of the new hugely fat models though, making one based on the M4 would be a shame. This would have to be something new, small, 2 doors, removable (optional) backseat, relatively lightweight, RWD.

Why is all that so hard to do? It's more or less what made BMW famous.

There just isn't enough money in those kind of projects. Don't forget we had the E92 M3 GTS, that came damn close to what you're asking for.

So the best thing BMW could show us in Detroit is a model they introduced 40 years ago. Makes total sense.

BMW keeps breaking sales numbers. They don't give two shits about losing 1 BMW enthusiast if they gain 5 BMW lemmings by making BMW's like every other luxury brand.

WOW this looks so like the Playstation Gran Turismo concept car colour scheme and aero (the one that's M2 based). I wonder if its a message the m2 is coming in CSL format with this colour scheme

M235i racing edition is close to this CSL.

M3 GTS doesn't count. I loved the S65 but the E9x M3 was just damn big TBH, and a couple hundred pounds too heavy. I came very close to buying one several times. But I could never get comfortable with how large it felt.

Whatever happened to developing cars to flex your R&D muscle? To show what you could do? To let your engineers have some fun for once? And the i8 doesn't count here either, that car is so restrained it just has engineer job hate written all over it.

And there is so much truth in this unfortunately. The 1M would have been a great niche car and instead of selling it for years along side the M3 as they should have, they did a limited run. Look how popular it is, and there are so few of them most of those will never REALLY see the outside of a garage, or a corner in the rain. And it's not like it wasn't popular from the get go, people couldn't even get an allocation for it.

BMW has to know they have an untapped market. Has it really gotten to the point that they aren't willing to make the car just because it wont make them AS MUCH money as their lemming-mobiles?

Damn shame.

BMW has become about as interesting as Kia to me. I'm done with this brand. On to Ford, Mercedes and Porsche for a sports car.

So it's turning into the premium Toyota ?
No problem, but you can't continue to use the "ultimate driving machine" phrase anymore

Right now it's a penis size competition between audi, Mb, and bmw
No niche will be ignored
No body shape ignore
Sales, sales, sales

If you continue down this path, you lose your premium status
If everyone owns a bmw, it's not considered something you aspire to anymore
Just like a corolla or a civic is not a car people aspire to own

From someone that's owned 5 BMWs in the last 7 years
There isn't a single bmw currently in production I'd like to own now
Maybe the m235 but it's too small for me
Shame, I love this brand, but I'm not paying the asking price for a bmw if it does nothing for me
If it doesn't excite me, its not worth a premium
