Only reason to keep your tank over 1/4 tank full is for emergencies.

I worry more about sucking crap at the bottom of the tank than anything else but perhaps even that is something mental in my mind from the old days

It does say in the owners manual
"HINTS
Refuel promptly
Refuel no later than at a range of 30 miles/50 km, or operation of the engine is not assured and damage may occur."

It certainly may be for mindless hyper-miler squeeze every ounce out of a tank drivers, but the 1/4 tank statement, I don't think, is stupid.

Driving it till E doesn't improve your fuel economy

You're only going to stress your fuel pump if you drive on flat out empty more often than not. I fill up either on the 1st or 2nd indication, depending upon how close the gas station is.

Some real funnies in here haha. I've been down to '0' miles a few times, and I found out that when that mother fucker says you have 0 miles left, you have exactly one gallon of fuel left.

When I had a Genesis Coupe I made sure I never let the tank go below a quarter tank.

30 miles/50km.....that is certainly less than a 1/4 of a tank left.

Sorry to disagree, but the 1/4 tank statement (three fourths empty) in my view really is stupid. Not that we worry about it in the UK with filling stations everywhere.

The fuel pump is indeed fuel cooled. However you have to run it bone dry to damage it. Even running to --- as leftover distance still has the pump in a nice bath. Bottom line, if the car sputters from lack of fuel, stop. Otherwise no need to get scared by imaginary threats.

Things like: fuel separation (maybe worse with ethanol) and the weight on the fuel on the bottom from fuel on top - I'm finding more then a few articles recommending the minimum 1/4 tank fill as a precautionary tip.

so if I am running lower than 1/4 and not near a gas station should I add water to the tank to be sure the pump stays cool?

^^
Distiller water to prevent rusting would be preferred.

Yes, after 9/11. I never go below 1/2 tank.

Technically, driving to E will use less gas than the guy (like me) who won't go below 1/2 tank:

Why?

Lighter car is more economical.

The fuel pump has a thermal cut off. It would be pretty dumb to allow the fuel pump to get red hot---TWA 800
