Short sleeve shirts
Ok, I'm finding very mixed opinions on short sleeve shirts with ties. The only consistency is that everyone brings up the NASA engineer thing when discussing them.
I'm thinking a good quality short sleeve linen shirt with a skinny casual tie *and* a sport coat is ok. Some sites agree, but only if the coat is included. Note: I do not work in a formal office dress environment. I could get away with a Hawaiian shirt and jeans if I wanted to. I saw one site that had what they considered acceptable short sleeve shirt looks and I was amazed at how stupid the models looked with their pants cuffed up with no socks and dress shoes. No offense, but when I see that look I picture the guy wading into a duck pond to retrieve his toy sailboat. I just want to be able to dress neatly for certain meetings and still not be dying from the heat. Linen shirts are cool and comfy and I have several very lightweight sport coats. So what say?

IMO short selves = NO. I work at a finance company on Park Ave and I have yet to see someone wearing short sleeves in my company or others around me.

Um, this comes to mind.
I say no to short sleeves and ties. Just not a good look IMO. I'd still go long sleeve and tie, with lightweight sport coat as needed. |

But I'm also wary of the nerd look. I'd never do it without a sport coat, especially since *I am* an IT guy. But maybe even that is not workable.

If you're wearing a jacket, how is anyone going to know whether it's long or short sleeve?
If you're not wearing a jacket, it's generally ill advised to wear a tie no matter if your shirt is long/short sleeve. Long story short: Don't wear a tie unless you have a jacket on. If you're wearing that jacket, no one will be able to tell you have a short-sleeved shirt on. |

Dude, just go get a denim jacket and some frayed end jorts and rock a Canadian Tux if you're so worried about style and wanting a new change.

Note to self: Next time OT gets slow, bring up "short sleeve shirts."

A properly tailored jacket should generally show about 1/4-1/2" of your cuff. However, very few people are willing to spend the money to have a jacket properly tailored to them. Consequently, wearing a short sleeve shirt is no worse than wearing a poorly tailored jacket. Of note: I was watching an old Law & Order re-run last week and one of the detectives took his jacket off revealing the short-sleeve shirt he was wearing. With the jacket on, it was unnoticeable. Again, it's not optimal and it's something I'd personally never consider. However, it's ultimately a non-issue until you lift your arms up in the air |

And for some folks that leads to a whole other set of issues.
