That's right, because no one is on this site who follows the 1 series, or i3 or Diesel 3 series or any SUV from the X series line. All "Ultimate Driving Machines" <cough!>

BMW has a broad line of cars that appeal to a wide array of customers.
But all those cars you mentioned served a different purpose but designed from the start to be as dynamic as possible within their limitations - xdrive + high center of gravity in x models or electric city vehicles - . This vehicle exists in bmw's lineup albeit in a different shape 1ser 5 door and the only reason for it to be fwd is cost cutting. All vehicles mentioned in this post have ruined by esp btw

Ha! Me too!

Amazing how people act like they are making buying decisions over a an artist's rendering and a blurb on a web page.

Every time you say you like or don't like this 'render', you are saying you don't like this 'draw'. You wouldn't normally say that would you?

since I didnt run afoul of the grammar police.. just wanted to ask..
Are you actually seeking intelligent life forms on an Internet forum ?

Given the enlarging of the 3-series (and its price), plus the new entry models from Audi and Mercedes (for similar reasons / chasing similar customer), this lower-priced entry-level Bimmer seems likely to be a big seller. No, it won't have the driving dynamics of a RWD car, but can we pause for a moment to acknowledge how many people love the go-cart handling of the MINI? With this on the same platform as the latest MINI, it should hopefully handle well, even if it inevitably exhibits FWD characteristics.

As a manual transmission enthusiast, I'm disappointed that BMW has scaled back which models it offers with manual (i.e., AWD + manual), but given I live in an area with long, snowy winters, I'm down with a FWD 120i + manual (not offered on new A3 or CLA in U.S.).

Obviously RWD devotees will stay away, but price-conscious shoppers who are open to FWD (and/or have little awareness of FWD vs. RWD) will hop right on it.

Yeah... I've really got to say, that's what it is. I really need it to have a stick if I'm going to pay money for that car. The FWD vs RWD is a serious, serious disappointment, and it will forever effect how the car looks and handles, but for my money, it would be the lack of a manual transmission that would be unforgivable. I won't buy a CLA or an A3 because of it. And I would love nothing more than to own an A3, as I always loved the B5 S4, but no stick... no sale.

Per BMW's recent trend, I'm sure the stick will not be available with any AWD drivetrain...

So the Mini Cooper (particularly the S and the JCW's) were not developed to be as dynamic as possible? I mean think about it, JCW is basically Mini's "M" division. You should take one of them for a spin, particularly around a track.

How about the 1 series, E36 Compact and E46 Compact devotees? Where should they migrate to? Most of us came from the E30, and regard the E36/E46 coupe/sedan as too large/heavy. The current 3 series is huge.

BMW purist may says we are all wrong, however I am pleased to read the various opinions on what may be coming our way in BMW models in the not too distant future.

Yes, it is difficult trying to see what the styling trend will be in 3 to 5 years time.

I do think BMW needs to be far more design forward on new models. They have done a reasonable job on the current models but it needs to be class leading next time around.

It would be nice to think that the BMW boffins might be reading these blurbs and may consider some of the suggestions or observations. We will have to wait and see.

I guess it depends on where you get your definitions from:

Rendering is the process of generating an image from a 2D or 3D model (or models in what collectively could be called a scene file), by means of computer programs

"Rendering" also happens to be the present participle of the verb "to render"; present participles can be turned into nouns more easily than infinitives (engineering, marketing, selling - which BTW are in turn all verbs derived from nouns).

Render as a noun is ONLY defined as "a coat of plaster applied to a brick or stone surface".

Given the way "burglar" has gone... I'm not optimistic (burglar -> burglary -> burglarize -> burglarization -> burglarizationist?).

More seriously - is it just me, or this is what the 3 series should be? I remember the E30 (and at a pinch the E36) as small, sporty cars.

I agree. The 3-series has turned into a big, luxurious car. If you compare it to old BMWs, it is perhaps closer to the original 7-series than the original 5-series...

Yes, in Europe, the E28 was an even older five series! :-)
I was thinking about the E23 7 series.

Whoopsie - my bad!!! The 735 data are from the E32, which was the 7 series in Europe too, about 25 years ago.

Fixed the post above too.
