Question Performance exhaust for F20 116i ?

Hi all,

During my research about the difference between 116 and 118 (F20), I realised the only major difference is the Exhaust which seems to be at the last section of exhaust system ( correct me if I'm wrong)

So I am thinking at some point and time upgrade my exhaust to something that improves the performance and adds a bit of sound character to the car.
Definitely don't want to sound too loud or absurd, but just something that has some depth and sportiness sound without being too loud or annoying.

Do you have any recommendations ? Would one pipe exhaust tail be sufficient or should I upgrade to dual pipe ( and somehow cut the bumper part to allow two pipes) ?

Appreciate any suggestion

I haven't done research on the parts involved myself, but I have read the conclusions from others who did, and they mentioned that the downpipe was different between the 116i and 118i.

Is the down pipe the last section after the silencer? I guess changing that part only won't be sufficient as the silencer exit would be the small diameter as well.

I would like to hear from those whom made the change in exhaust and actually felt any difference.

Cheers

No, as I understand it, the downpipe is right next to the turbo.

I would think so, but I have never replaced it myself.
It is probably rather expensive.

Use realoem.com doing a quick comparison, the downpipe is the same but the centre and rear pipe is different.

Yes, indeed. I also checked it myself now. All except for the downpipe is different. Always better to check yourself than believing others.

Thanks for the link. Quite useful.
So would it worth to change that section with a performance exhaust? If so what is a good replacement in terms of power increase and better sport class engine noise (something deep but not overally loud or noisy )

Thanks , I actually looked at their site and their products seems decent.
I thought down pipe was not the issue?! And the rest is restricting the 116i engine

The downpipe is the most restrictive factor in your 116i compared to the 118i.
The Supersprint downpipe is a catalytic converter with a 200 CPSI unit. (1686 euro incl VAT).
This means that your engine can exhale a little better than with the stock downpipe.
This is a good thing....but don't expect a lot more HP or torque.
The only thing that will improve is the sound.
When you want more power you need a powerbox (Racechip, Hartge, AC Schnitzer, etc).

I think the final drive between 116 and 118 is different too but I can't comment as it's too technical for me. Lol

But we just found that the downpipe in the 116i and the 118i is the same. It has the same part number on RealOEM.

I missed that part.

So the 116i has the same exhaust flow rate as the 118i, but the rest of the exhaust is different (restricted)?
Strange because during my education it's was the rule that turbo engines (with adjustable valves) had the restriction factor as close to the turbo as possible.
I'm still confused.

We need some expert to enlighten us about this exhaust comparison and to see if there is an actual benefit gained by replacing it ( parallel to using ACS tuning box )

The stock BMW exhaust systems are pretty good, making it difficult to add performance gains by swapping it to something else. I guess you could gain a little by installing the 118i exhaust.
