Squeaky Brakes

Hi,

My month old F20 (with 1500 miles on it) has squeaky brakes. I have the M Performance brakes and at very low speed lite application of the brakes they squeak I think it's coming from the back set only.

I have tried a few heavy braking sessions from 60 just in case they were glazed but after a few miles it comes back again.

Anyone else got this problem? Any thoughts on a fix or back to the dealer?

Cheers

D

It's a "standard" feature on the F20. German forums are full with this issue. Even though it's only a comfort problem and not a safety problem, it's still annoying as hell. My brakes (standard breaks) tend to sequak too during stop-n-go traffic.
Then again on some days the problem does not occur with my car.

Apparently BMW also offers altered brake pads to resolve this issue. But on the other hand, that doesn't seem to work either in some cases.
Therefore I'd recommend you talking to your dealer.

As Aspe said, it is pretty standard on most F20's and according to my dealer has to do with the brake pad compound. Mine was really annoying between 7-18.000 kms, now I have 25k and it occurs very rarely...like every once a week or so, whereas before it was almost everyday! Cleaning the brakes was only a temporary solution as the squick appeared after 800 kms.

Your right in that it is more of an annoyance thank functional. But you would think that BMW could have done just a little better. For example, the active M Sport suspension/chassis is excellent and work so well. So by comparison some as simple as a squeaky brake pad could have been tested and resolved before the car went on sale.

Oh well, if this is the only problem I ever have with the car I guess I am doing ok.

I think I have been braking quite a lot, since I am one of few people here on the forum that participate in track days...

Norway is too cold for squeaking, the sounds loses its energy as its released from your brakes due to the temperature.... ergo you can hear them.

But they are squeaking

Same problem, similar mileage, but mine only squeaks in reverse from the rear discs.

Given the enormous size of the discs themselves and only 2 callipers gripping them it seems like a design flaw somewhere. Too early to be brake pad glazing, although they might need to be scrubbed in with some heavy stops at speed.

God only knows why they didn't fit vented discs. Probably wouldn't squeak so much if they were full of holes.

Maybe your are braking so much and so hard the brakes don't squeal. Maybe everyone should be driving like that on public roads, then there would be no squealing

Just be careful - my squeaky brakes on my 335 were 'fixed' under warranty but ever since, I've had an ongoing problem with what I can only describe as a snapping sound when I apply my brakes. In the 3 years that this problem has existed it has never been sorted out, although it has never affected braking performance but my advice is live with the squeal or squeak.
