Cool 2012 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe vs 2012 Mercedes Benz CLS

Well, this head to head is still very much hypothetical, but the recently revealed BMW Concept Gran Coupe is a car hatched to directly compete with the successful Mercedes Benz CLS. The CLS itself is being updated this year, with the new model already seen and set to be officially launched very soon. BMW for its part has been leaking word that the stunningly beautiful Concept Gran Coupe has been green lit for production and will likely slot inside of the 6-Series family.

Taking the cue of this brewing mega class battle, German publication Auto Bild has put together an imagined head to head in order to compare the two cars. They are both beautiful examples of German machinery, but without my obvious bias, the BMW wins by a wide margin.

why does the 6er have such a large front overhang? Looks wierd and goes against the BMW mantra of long wheelbases and negligible overhangs

Maybe BMW has extended the hood forward to meet strict pedestrian crash requirements? From my understanding, a longer, lower hood helps with this. So BMWs options are:

1. Extend the hood back towards the passenger cabin, sacrificing interior space, but preserving BMW's signature short front overhang

2. Extend the hood forwards, preserving interior space, but creating a longer front overhang - more reminiscent of a front wheel drive car.

Cheers!

6er looks a little boring next to the CLS.

I will take a CLS with the new 5.5 twin turbo AMG powerplant.

thats not what im talking about. a four door coupe was nothing new with the CLS anyway. their designs make no sense. every time i see a new benz model, its like theyre picking up cues from everywhere. dont get me wrong, theres a few MB models that i love including the previous CLS

maybe ive just adapted to understanding BMWs designs that nothing else makes sense
