N13 Overboost?

Does anyone know if the N13 engine (found in 114i, 116i, 118i) is capable of overboost? A related engine, the N18, found in the MINI Cooper S, has an overboost function that increases torque from 240 to 260 NM. Might the N13 have this function but is disabled by default by the ECU?

I have seen it mentioned also in BMW advertisments, so I suspect it is enabled in the N13. Most spec sheets do not mention it, though.

Garage List
I remember when i first read the press release for the F20 that the 116i (but not the 118i) had over-boost function, increasing torque by 20 Nm.

This is quite tricky. All turbo engines have 'overboost' but not exactly the way you descibe it. In a few words, 'overboost' happens when you floor it and the turbocharger boosts more pressure in the mid rpm range, than it keeps in high rpm. This phase is a feature of all modern turbo engines. Mini cooper S, 'over'boosts to 0.95bar and as it moves to the redline, the boost gets stabilised to 0.7bar. Something similar happens with N13B16 and it is not an extra feature or tweak of the ECU.
I hope that helps.

So does that mean the torque figures for the N13 are inclusive of overboost?

Please take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_1_Series_(F20)

Torque (normal value): 220 N·m (162 lb·ft) @1350–4300 rpm
Overboost: 240 N·m (177 lb·ft) @1500–3500 rpm

However, it seems that only 116i has this feature regardless of sharing the same engine (N13) with 114i and 118i.

So if you floor the pedal, you have a limited time 20 N·m gain?

Yes if you floor it you get 240Nm (in the 1500-3500rpm range)
114i, 118i and pretty much all turbo engines can boost more psi in mid range rpm, or fail to sustain their max boost in high rpm range.
It is just marketing guys.
