M135i vs A45 AMG vs S3 - CAR magazine

Haven't read the full review, probably try and pick up my copy after work tonight but I skipped to the all important bit, the final paragraph and CAR have given the title to the Merc this time round. 500 mile round trip to compare the 3 and they recommend the Merc as it holds a more individual feel than the other two. Apparently the Audi feels like an S line, the BMW feels like its had some M performance input but the Merc despite obviously being a full AMG, lives up to its promise. Higher price tag or not. Be interesting to have a full read later

Worth a read but again you can't compare a full blown amg model to the s3 or m135i. It's got an m badge but its not a m. The test should be as follows a45 vs m2 (if we are lucky) vs rs3. The m135i vs s3 vs oh wait merc don't have a competitor in that category.

Of course you can compare them, but you can not expect them to be exactly equal. When comparing two unequal cars, the verdict is often that the more expensive car is better, but the cheaper one is better value for money.

Price of the M2 and RS3 will be interesting. Audi will probably cost the most, but offer the most power and BMW I think will cost more than the Merc but offer more as standard. CAR seem to think 355bhp for the M2, I was hoping between 365-380bhp and 377bhp for RS3, but I've read that Audi will top 400bhp this time round

I'll try and have it up by Saturday. Busy week at work, bought the magazine last night but didn't get the chance to read the full road test yet. I know it came down to the Merc and BMW in the end and I think the BMW lost points based on it being ugly to look at in comparison and they said it needed to be a more special place to be when inside the cabin as well. Personally I think seats asside the Merc looks tacky inside tbh, cheap fake carbon all over the dash etc.

I think the notion that the A45 is better-looking than the M135i is definitely debatable. I showed my other half, who is Italian and therefore considers herself by right the final arbiter on things good taste- and design-related, an A45 the other day and her response was "eurgh, it looks horrible. I'm glad you didn't get one of those".

Anyway, Car often has some funny notions (as do Autocar of late). I shall wait to see what EVO think.

No what they do to preserve the sales of their magazines is release the reviews, head to heads etc a month or so after its been in the mag online for people to read. I read the full article on my break at work today and I still think the M135i comes out on top going by what they were saying, compared to what im looking for in a motor. comfiest ride, nicest sounding engine, best midrange and most exciting ride.

I don't think that A45 will have a chance against M2 or RS3, it's real rivals

I didnt wanna upload scans because all it would take is a sneaky little bugger to grass me up and suddenly I've invited unwanted attention. In a nutshell, the article involves 70% in depth info about the Merc and 30% rival battle info, where the race for the title comes down to the BMW and Merc, Merc takes the crown even though the BMW seems to have the mention for most of the possitive aspects mentioned. Almost like the AMG won in an unorthodox fashion

Can you point to a case where that's happened? In my experience, showing part of magazine qualifies as a "fair use", especially if the magazine is out of print or unavailable. The worst that ever happens is for the forum admin to get a nasty letter telling them to take the material down

Elsewhere, I read an interview of the AMG Chairman, where he stated the 2.0 motor is "thermodynamically optimized" or words to that effect, which I read as suggesting there's not much more to be gained, reliably

I'm pretty sure Brabus will squeeze those last few drops from it in the coming months. The M135 is imo only a remap away from being fully capable of putting it to the sword. I still think the stock midrange would see off the AMG in most real world scenario's.

That's one of the reasons I think Bauer Media (among many) abuse their copyright monopoly. Here in Australia, they don't release the iPad edition until the print version is available...here! Sorry

M2 not out yet so not comparable, but according to AMG, A45 is considerably faster than RS3.

Audi wont produce anything groundbreaking with their new RS3, its a typically impressive straightline car, but thats its only real party trick. Round a track its nothing special, I've read reviews where its been put to the sword by a RS265 round a circuit. I think the Ford Focus RS and M2 will be the real competition tbh.
