If they aren't automatic and they are advertised as such, you probably have grounds for returning the car and asking for a refund.
In this day and age, nobody should have to push a button to make their wipers function.

Strange. No mention in my handbook. In fact it makes a point of suggesting you pull the wiper off the screen in frozen conditions.

I went back and had a look, just to make sure I wasn't spreading misinformation. It's page 64 in my manual..

Strange. Page 64 goes on about washer fluid then the manual gearbox. Although page 63 is all about the wipers.Maybe they added the info because of such questions as raised here.

How about BMW give us a system where it remembers the last setting before you switch off the car? That way you can have auto wipers or not dependent on your preference... Same thing as the start stop system!

They already do on some models. My E92 M3 had "last key position" Which stored your chosen settings.

I don't mind the auto wipers that much. They're better than the ones I had in my Golf. Yes, they're respond too slow when you suddenly hit a splash of water, but since you can do a manual wipe without canceling the auto function I don't think it's a big deal.
But I also think it's not such a big deal to press a button once to engage the auto function. That said, the sensitivity setting seems useless to me (mine is always on the II setting), and the LED for the auto mode is barely visible.

The automatic high beam control must also be enabled by a button, and you even have to press a button to enable the cruise control before using it.

I'm not at all bothered with the auto wipers. It's no great shakes to just press a button when you see a few spots of rain, and then forget about it. In my old Peugeot GTI-6 You had to actually switch the stalk back to the off position and on again to reset them. |

My VW lights were always on auto and came on automatically without manual intervention. I only really noticed this after buying a bmw with manual auto wipers. Bizarre.

It's works the same in my E46 but is even more confusing since you miss the orange/green led around the speedo. (I have to admit I like that bit)

I don't mind the BMW cruise control at all. I like that it includes braking downhill ( I drive on the limit on a heavily enforced motorway very frequently, and received a ticket in a previous car, which gained speed over the limit downhill while on CC) And I like the choice of 1kph or 10kph increments when altering the cruise setting) |

The cruise is awesome, for us its 1mph or 5mph increments in the UK.
Its much better than the stupid stalk I had on my e90, kept flashing folk trying to put cruise on haha

The cruise control works very well on fairly flat roads, but not so good in hilly areas. It basically brakes too much at the bottom of downhill sections, and accelerates too much at the end of uphill sections. Compared to normal driving, it wastes quite a lot of fuel.
If it was up to me, the three buttons would be replaced by one. It could be marked "Resume/Cancel". If the cruise was active, it would disable it. If cruise was disabled, it would resume the previously used speed. To set a new speed, simply use the small +/- thingy. And if the speed is set to 67, a +10 command should jump to 77, not to 70. |

The cruise works really well on my 125d but the auto wipers are ridiculous. I think it’s just a cheaper version of the system in the higher models. In my E90 M3 the ‘Auto Wipers’ without the need to press the button to tell the car you want to activate auto wipers.
Also the keyless start is stupid. It works well when coupled with keyless entry but on its own it’s more hassle than help. I would rather slot the key in the dash and know where it will be rather than find a place to keep the key whilst driving. |

There is a dedicated key holder in front of the gear lever. But I would also prefer to switch the ignition on and off with the key. The start button is confusing. I sometimes start the car again when I just want to stop the music before leaving the car.
